From China to USA, from Renaissance to the Tang dynasty, from poor to rich, all definitions to beauty have dramatically changed, even within a short period of time. For instance, in the Tang Dynasty, fat is known as gorgeous so Yang Guifei is the most beautiful women at that time. The majority of women are not born with a perfect and physical appearance that coincide with the current beauty standard of the society. Therefore, many contestants have undergone plastic surgeries in order to improve their appearance. For example, an 18-year-old girl, Yang Yuan, has undergone 11 cosmetic surgery procedures including rhinoplasty, mandibular angle reduction and orthodontics, spending 11,000 yuan in order to stand out from other participants in the beauty pageant (Hua). Such practise of excessive cosmetic surgeries may increase their vulnerability to other potential health risks, such as the long-term risk of cancer and symptoms of rheumatic disease (Gilmartin, 2010). Apart from physical health risk, participating in beauty pageant may also associate with mental health problems. Striving for perfect body, women taking part in those competitions may exert high pressure on them, contributing to a higher likelihood of body dissatisfaction, interpersonal distrust as well as impulse dysregulation coupled with greater ineffectiveness than non-participants (Wonderlich, Ackard, & Henderson, 2005). Research has shown the correlation between such adverse effects and mass media exposure about thin female ideals (Pinhas, Toner, Ali, Garfinkel, & Stuckless, 1999). Facebook, Instagram and Twitter all share one thing in common – they are all infiltrating our lives, bombarding us with slim women who participate in beauty pageants.
