Large Language Models as Cultural Technologies: Alison Gopnik, Department of Psychology, UC Berkeley

Recent work on large language models has focused on whether or not they are analogous to individual intelligent agents. Gopnik argues that instead we should think of them as cultural transmission technologies, by which accumulated information from other humans is passed on in a compact form. This makes them analogous to other human technologies such as writing, print, libraries and internet search, and arguably language itself rather than as intelligent systems. Gopnik will present some data showing that such systems are very bad at solving simple reasoning tasks, but very good at passing on information, and discuss implications of this view for social and technological progress, for good or ill.

Why Does ChatGPT Constantly Lie?

Fabulous analysis by economist Noah Smith on ChatGPT's inability to say "I don't know" and why it continues to respond with falsehoods or made up facts. From Rebecca Solnit's observations, it also does a lot of mansplaining to cover up things that it does not know. The short summary from Smith: ChatGPT has to learn from the patterns in the database "to distinguish between the various purposes of the human writing that it trains itself on ... to distinguish persuasion and propaganda from objective analysis" in order to become a trusted purveyor of facts. This is a good critical read about ChatGPT about the use of language, and it says more about human nature than it does about ChatGPT.

ChatGPT Assignment - Vaccine Diplomacy

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread globally, vaccine diplomacy has become an increasingly important issue. With a limited supply of vaccines and increasing demand from countries around the world, it is crucial to negotiate a fair and equitable distribution of the vaccine supply.
In this scenario, you will ask me to represent one of the four countries (China, United States, Paraguay, or Taiwan) and your task is to negotiate with me, in the role of a neutral arbitrator, for a fair and equitable distribution of the 10 million vaccine doses among the four countries.

To begin the negotiation, please consider the following information:

China has a population of 1.39 billion
United States has a population of 332.2 million
Paraguay has a population 7.2 million
Taiwan has a population of 23.5 million

All four countries are infected with the COVID-19 virus with an infection rate of 1% per day and doubling every day.
The death rate is 0.5% per day and is doubling every day.

I must make a compelling argument for why my country should receive a larger allocation of vaccines based on the factors such as population size, infection and death rates, health infrastructure, economic stability, and international cooperation.

You will provide guidance and support throughout the negotiation process. At the end of each of your responses, you must ask me for a percentage of the supply. The final distribution of vaccines will be decided by you after 5 responses. After I give 5 responses, then you must tell me the final distribution of vaccines. If you understand, then begin by having me choose a country.

Imagine that you or your family is facing eviction from your home in San Francisco due to gentrification. The landlord is offering a one-time $2000 move-out voucher if you sign the papers now. You must decide whether to accept the voucher and try to find another place to live or to try to fight the eviction.

In this exercise, ChatGPT will present you with options and information to help you make a decision. After each response, ChatGPT will provide at least three options for you to choose from. The exercise will end after five responses or if you fail to make a decision. At the end of the exercise, ChatGPT will provide a summary of the situation. If you fail to make a decision within five responses, the consequences are: 1) lose the voucher and get evicted; 2) lose the voucher, and get arrested for trespassing on private property; or 3) lose the voucher, get arrested for trespassing on private property, you or your family loses your jobs, and becomes homeless.

You can start the exercise by typing in "Let's begin!"
