i just want my nails painted

Whenever I try and paint my own nails, I always struggle painting my write hand, which is my dominant hand. I find that my left hand always looks great and then when I get to my right hand, it looks like a 4 year old did it. When I was painting my nails last week, I thought, why not use my knowledge of bilateral transfer to improve my skills. So when I chose my color, I decided to start by painting on of my nails on my right hand. And then I painted all five of my nails on my left hand, and then finished off my right hand, and wow, I had never done my nails even better. I transferred my skill of painting my nails from my right hand to my left hand and I couldn't be happier that I figured this out.

back to my basketball days

I think about when I was playing basketball in high school and how our practices could have been run much better. Our coaches would instruct us to take 10 free throws, then 10 layups, then 10 3 pointers. This would have been an example of blocked practice, which is proven to show poorer results in retention tests. Now knowing that randomize our practicing of these shots we could have performed way better in our games because we were never in that situation where our shots were in a blocked variability, our shots were always random. Randomized practice is shown to have better result in retention tests and if I were to go back to my basketball days, I would suggest this to my coaches.

braiding days

As a girl, I always find that no matter how much I try and teach my brother how to braid hair, every time he struggles and mine always look better than his. If we were to be in a city with a physical map, he would be better at directing us to our destination by using the map than me. Individual differences of motor skills when it comes to gender is very prevalent in our society. It has been proven that women are better at manual dexterity while men are better at mental rotation, and this can be proven in both of these scenarios. Manual dexterity applies more to braiding. Mental rotation applies to looking at a map and relating it to directions in a city.

neat vs. messy

Time and time again I have been at home after class rereading my notes. And every time I find myself barely able to read my handwriting. Fitts' Law was proven to be the tradeoff between speed and accuracy. When writing fast, like the first sentence in the picture, you tradeoff accuracy for speed, making your handwriting messier. When writing slow, you tradeoff speed for accuracy and your handwriting will come out neater and more accurate. When it comes to writing notes, writing faster and trading it off for accuracy may be okay because having neat writing may not be that important, but in many other situations, trading off speed for more accurate writing may be helpful.

improving throughout life

My whole life, I played soccer and I was a goalie. Every other child who plays soccer knows that goalie is the most unwanted position, and in many times the goalie is chosen by alphabetical order. This was the exact way that I began playing goalie, and let me tell you I did start out as a novice, with very little skill. Continuing to practice between 6th grade and senior year of high school, my skills continued to improve. This was due to motor learning. My ability to punt a ball got better because of the continuous practice each and every practice. My diving got better because of the continuous practice each and every practice. My motor learning of goal keeper skills throughout my time improved, and it brought me to being on my high school's varsity soccer team.
