Yet, the Victorian era (1837-1901), is also known for its hypocrisy, ie the contradictions in Victorian morals, or more specifically a gap between ideals and behaviour.

Algernon and Jack have double lives because they feel trapped by these moral standards.

In the Victorian era (19837-1901), a young woman was not expected to focus too obviously on finding a husband. Being « forward » in the company of men suggested a worrying sexual appetite. They were not even supposed to speak to men unless there was a married woman present as a chaperone.

Gwendolen does not correspond to that image of the young woman. She is forward with Jack and gives him instructions to propose her. However Oscar Wilde hints at the hypocrisy of Victorian morality because Gwendolen does not show a worrying sexual appetite, she rather behaves like a little girl having the childish dream of marrying someone named Ernest.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a comedy of manners in which Oscar Wild euses great wit and figures of speech to present a satirical image of the Victorian society. The playwright is very sophisticated and gives an opportunity to the audience to reflect upon the standards of society. The characters are stereotypical and caricature given figures such as the dandy, the stern chaperoness, the silly young lady,... stock characters are crucial elements in comedies of manners.

Gwendolen and Cecily's encounter is a caricature, they immediately consider each other as best friends but their friendship is soon forgotten when they understand they are engaged to the same man. They turn very mean to each other and become friends again when the truth is unveiled about their lovers. They change their minds and are not at all 'earnest' as their friendship has no value and does not imply any loyalty.

Cecily uses her diary to make up an imaginary relationship with Ernest, whom she has never met. She writes about their romance and even writes a fictitious correspondance. Her diary is a fiction but a diary is supposed to witness the writer's life. Moreover, a diary is designed to be secret and Cecily reads and shares passages all the time. We learn that Gwendolen also has a diary, which she shares with Cecily without hesitation. The object's purpose is twisted.

There are several main moments when teatime takes place in the play : in Act I, when Jack visits Algernon to meet Gwendolen and Lady Bracknell, in Act II when Gwendolen and cecily are having tea together and when Jack and Algernon are discussing the situation eating muffins and drinking tea. Each time, the etiquette does not apply, for instance Algernon always eats the sandwiches of the guests. Teatime was a very important way of socialising and was an occasion for gossips.
