Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a 20th and 21st century South African activist, lawyer and politician (born July 18, 1918 and died December 5, 2013 at the age of 95) known primarily for:
- Fight peacefully against racial segregation in South Africa.
- Establish a democratic political model in South Africa.
In 1948 a group of radical nationalists came to the government of South Africa, bringing with them a regime of racial segregation in which the supremacy of the white man was imposed. Mandela, far from succumbing to the racist absolutism of the government, organized a non-violent civil disobedience rebellion from within the ANC. After 10 years of incessant struggle against apartheid, the ruling leaders wanted to end the resistance of the ANC at its roots and outlawed the party, leading Mandela and the rest of the activists to organize an armed struggle from underground. On August 5, 1962, Nelson Mandela was arrested for conspiracy against the government (among other crimes) and would spend the next 27 years of his life in jail.
During the 1980s, the increase in racial violence and the development of global society catalyzed the growth in the number of protests against the South African regime with Mandela's name as a banner. The government, faced with the internal and international pressure to which it was being subjected, decided to release Mandela on February 11, 1990. Three months after his release he was elected to lead the ANC and from his position of power he fought for the democracy, achieving that in 1994 the first democratic elections in the history of South Africa were held with him as the winner, thus becoming the first black president of South Africa.

The last years of his life after the presidency (1994-1999) were dedicated to continuing his social action internationally as well as through the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Finally, on December 5, 2013, after more than a decade retired from public life, he died of a respiratory infection at the age of 95.

“Let freedom reign, not politicians”

Personally, I believe that Nelson Mandel is one of the most important activists since he never gave up, and even though there were adversities, he went ahead so that human rights were not violated

She is 24 years old, born in Kampala Uganda. She watched her family struggle to farm in the Masaa district of Uganda in the midst of climate changes such as severe droughts and seeing the work in Greta Thunberg's Twitter posts is what motivated her to become an activist today. She fights in her country and around the world for environmental and climate rights. She also supports gender equality and racial diversity in the climate change movement. Hilda founded Fridays for the Future Uganda and mobilized Ugandan students to strike for climate action by skipping Friday classes in solidarity with youth around the world, has successfully spoken at international conferences such as COP25 and C40, and has called on world leaders to act on climate change. She hasn't reported any kind of persecution or anything like that, but she still stands by her purpose and promise, to fight for climate justice.
I think she is an exemplary young woman who deserves more recognition. I think that today it is very good that there are activists who defend climate change, which is a problem that has affected millions of families like Hilda's family in 2017. In addition, when they are the ones who live the facts in their own flesh, it is inspiring. I hope she continues with her activist process and can achieve more of her purpose. <3
Reference: Morris, E.

Leidy Lorena Ayala Avendaño- 11-1

Nelson Mandela.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was born on July 18, 1918, in Mvezo (South Africa). Belonging to the Xhosa ethnic group, he was one of the 13 children his father had with four different wives. He had a happy childhood listening to stories of his people, when they were free, before the arrival of the whites.

He attended high school and high school, and finally entered the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), where he graduated, in 1942, as a lawyer. Combining early advocacy jobs in a law firm, Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC); an organization that carried out peaceful campaigns against the discrimination and excessive exploitation suffered by South African blacks. This is how his political career would begin.

In 1943 he founded the Youth League and organized large protests against the racial segregation known as "apartheid". Through strikes and other non-violent protests, his name began to be heard more and more. For its part, the government repressed the protesters with blood and violence, and that was when Mandela resorted to armed struggle.

The following year he was captured and sentenced to life imprisonment. There he would spend 27 years of his life in precarious conditions; He was only allowed one visit and one letter every six months. In 1969 the South African secret service prepared the murder of Mandela inside the same jail; they would simulate an escape attempt where he would be killed in the guise of a recapture. Thanks to an agent of the British Intelligence Service, this operation was prevented.

Even while in jail, his fight did not stop. His name was being heard more and more and the fight against ‘apartheid’ was constant. He became known as the most important black leader in South Africa.

In 1990, moderate president Frederik de Klerk freed Nelson Mandela, who was 71 years old, and together they negotiated and repealed ‘apartheid’ a year later.
