Our students are so quick to believe everything they read/see on the internet. In my senior AVID class we spend a lot of time applying for scholarships online. There are so many websites out there that are just trying to get my students information and are not real scholarship opportunities. I try and teach my students to look for red flags and avoid sites that look too good to be true. This typically leads into a discussion about things online that are just trying to hack your computer and get your info.

I do an email etiquette lesson with my seniors. We go through the do's and don'ts email etiquette. Forwarding email chains is something we discuss. The majority of them say their parents/grandparents typically send out the email forwards/chains. I thought this was super interesting because my grandfather is always forwarding email chains to my family. My thoughts are this could possibly be a generational thing?

Most backup apps provide automatic backups so it is done for you on a regular basis. Our students usually don't have a ton of important information to keep up with but it's good for them to know as they get older.

- Joseph Harmonson

All of us, not just students, are terrible about clicking without reading/thinking. We get so used to pop ups and other things that get in the way of what we are trying to do, we've been trained to click through stuff quickly. We all need a reminder of how easy it is to click on something that could lead to bad stuff like malware or other threats.

-Joseph Harmonson

This is one I really have to focus on at the elementary level. Almost all the websites now have ads. For the most part, the ad blockers will take care of it but there are still some like pbs kids that are not caught. I teach the kids what is part of the website and what is not. I also do not allow them to download anything and they should always talk to their parents first before trying something at home.
-Maggie Williams

This is one that I have not really thought about before. After reading this, I believe I need to do a lesson on how to get help when you need it. Who to reach out to and how. Maybe something where they have to search how to get help on their most used sites. Don't ever download sharing software or to use their webcam for help.

This one is so relevant for younger kids! My daughter has received so many of these "chain" mails. It started in 4th grade (before she had her own phone) and her friends started a text group...my number was used so that my daughter could be a part. Most of the chatting was chain mails! So annoying! It was a great opportunity to talk with her about them. What's alarming is that some are more than just an innocent email and could contain malicious content.

This is good advice for any one that spends time online. Learning what is part of the website versus an ad or pop-up. Modeling the use of a website in your classroom to demonstrate this could be beneficial or helpful for the students. Take time to investigate something that looks "off" instead of diving right into it. This might involve a conversation with an adult or teacher to ask about the pop-up or email content that was received.

-AS

I agree with all that has been said here. We need to teach our students to use their minds when looking at all the great claims or the outlandish news articles. In one of the other columns someone mentioned maybe some generational things about forwarding email chains etc. I think that is spot on. My mom and aunts are likely to believe some of the stories they see on the internet and pass them on even if they are not reliable.
Tammy Watson
