Spender is saying here that we are going to destroy Mars just like we are destroying our environment on Earth, and everything good will be gone.

1. Book overall is all over the place. It shows us different places at different times and the evolution of the presence of humanity on Mars but leaves a lot of open gaps and questions. LD

2. Our group is mostly confused about the book and it’s plot, many of us agree that we do not like the book.

DL: Who are we to say no other life-forms live in the universe when our universe expands constantly?

The concept of this story can prove that we aren’t capable of understanding the possibilities of other life forms. It’s shown when Mrs. K tells Mr. K about her dreams and her husband finds its crazy. It’s also shown when Captain Williams was put into a psych ward instead of being praised for his experience on landing on mars.

What’s with all the Martian’s talk about hallucinations?

I think due to the Martian’s reliance on telepathy, they are able to have share hallucinations and trick people into believing their delusions. This is the main reason people want nothing to do with the Captain and his crew, as they think he is just another hallucinating Martian tricking them.

How is Captain Williams viewed amongst the Martians?

Captain Williams is an alien who is the leader of the ship up on the hill. He met the Martians during his Second Expedition. Williams is seen as insane because he believes that he is one of the first people to reach Mars, but the Martians want nothing to do with him.

That means Mars is finished; all this wonderful stuff gone. How would you feel if a Martian vomited stale liquor on the White House floor?’"

This quote shows how Mars is turning into a second Earth in the worst ways. Instead of trying to improve and adapt to the new planet, it appears that the mindset is wrapped around Mars simply being an extension of the blue planet.
