In the book, the Catcher in the Rye, the main character Holden has an obsession with innocence which is a theme laced throughout the story. It is not elaborated on further than the simple "small-kids-make-me-happy-and-I-want-to-be-happy-forever" idea, but with in depth analysis, readers can infer what Holden really means and wants with his assumed obsession with small children.

Holden spends the entire novel yearning after his former childhood innocence even though it continually escapes him. But by the end of the story when he has reconnected with Phoebe his focus shifts away from his own innocence and he begins trying to protect hers. They arrive at the carousel, a ride Holden remembers fondly from his childhood, but Holden refuses to ride it. He tells her "No, I'll just watch ya. I think I'll just watch" (212) as he continues to give her more money to ride again and again. He sits back on the park bench getting drenched in rain, essentially accepting his own aging, focusing on Phoebe. This is also shown by the fact that Holden gives Phoebe his red cap, a symbol of his desire to be unique and hide himself from the real world. By giving it to Phoebe and watching her ride the carousel Holden lives out his dream of being a catcher in the rye; a protector of innocence.
The carousel is an endless cycle of childhood, and Salinger's inclusion of it so close to the end of the story brings Holden's journey full circle, shifting from protecting his own youthfulness to protecting his sister's.
