All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven is a story of two troubled teens. Those teens being Violet Markey and Theodore Finch. Violet Markey is a girl that is constantly counting down the days until she graduates and mourning over the loss of her sister. Theodore Finch, is a completely different character. Both of them standing on the ledge of their school bell tower. Both of them having the same intentions until they save each other, not having it clear as to who saves whom.

Jennifer Niven’s novel, All the Bright Places, was a very good book that was hard to put down. Once you start reading it, it is hard to stop. The action in this book starts at the beginning, with Finch and Violet both being on the bell tower of the school, from then on it is hard to put the book down. The alternating point of view gives the reader a good look inside of both Finch and Violet and how they are feeling. Both of these characters not knowing how to handle the situation that they are in, only to discover something neither of them were expecting.

The portrayal of depression in this novel seems fairly accurate. Depression can be seen in both Finch and Violet. Violet is suffering from depression since her sister died in a car accident, and all Violet can think about is that it was her fault. Finch suffering from being bullied, because he has bad anger management, and from feeling as though he doesn’t have a father figure in his life.

I would recommend this novel to anyone that wants a good read. This novel makes you feel many different emotions, but tells a truly great story.

Depression can be seen throughout the novel, All the Bright Places. Right away from the beginning one can clearly tell that both of these teens are struggling. Finch's parents being divorced and he feels like the odd man out and Violet is struggling because she has lost her sister. Though both Finch and Violet are completely different, they have the same response as to how they want to deal with this struggle. They want to take their own lives, they feel as though no one could ever understand the way they are feeling. How much pain and anger is built up inside of them. As a result of both of them trying to vanish from their pain, they meet each other, and realize that they are the only ones that understand one another. That when they are together they help the other forget about the pain of the other stuff that has happened, they are happy together.
