The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in the daily lives of American citizens has become increasingly common, facilitating activities in various fields. Excessive reliance on these tools could hinder the development of critical thinking and creativity, especially among students, while also raising concerns about privacy and the spread of misinformation. On a social level, its widespread use can enhance efficiency but also deepen the digital divide between those with access to these technologies and those without. I believe that the impact of GAI in the U.S. is mostly positive, as it contributes to task optimization and learning enhancement, provided that proper regulations are implemented to mitigate the risks associated with its use.

I grew up in a time when computers were just becoming available as I started college. I have barely even scratched the surface of any level of understanding about AI. I expect that people my age largely don’t use AI unless they have exposure through their jobs. I would think that Mexico’s use of AI in education would likely be similar to that in the U.S. It seems so new that everyone is just trying to figure it out right now. I have only used it for content creation and even then, it feels like cheating. Only after watching the TED talk did I realize for the first time that the word “chat” in ChatGPT literally means you can talk to the AI! I realized I know even less than I thought I knew. I was shown what it can do recently by one of my professor that entered criteria for a paper I was writing and shared the response with me. It completely felt like I was cheating. The words the program came up with were so much better than mine. Once you see it, you can’t unsee it! My paper will be better, but I struggle with feeling like it’s cheating.

Based on the TED talk there are advantages to GAI that I was completely unaware of and still don’t know how to use. I am all for making mundane tasks more efficient. I have a LOT to learn. I do worry if we are engineering creativity out of people. I barely even understand enough to grasp what the speaker was referring to about customizing learning for students with GAI. I’m not at all sure how that would work, but it seems brilliant if you can easily create learning that meets students where they are to achieve greater levels of equity regardless of where your starting point is. This could be a great tool both for Mexico and the U.S>, particularly for students that are behind because of socio-economic factors that can distract students from fully focusing on their education.

Crecí en una época en la que las computadoras apenas empezaban a estar disponibles, justo cuando empecé la universidad. Apenas he empezado a comprender la IA.

Paragraph 1

Currently, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) represents a constant challenge in people's lifestyle and educational activities. Due to its versatile functionality, its field of application can range from entertainment to professional use. Its establishment in daily life represents a tool that facilitates day-to-day activities, from making online purchases to creating entertainment pages, and is also manifested in conducting research, completing tasks, creating programs, and the constant creation of new online services. In education, it represents a tool that facilitates the creation of schoolwork, making educational performance increase as it helps solve problems that could take days in just a few minutes.

Paragraph 2

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has great advantages, such as allowing the creation of attractive content, with images and sounds, increasing efficiency and creativity, facilitating and improving each program or project. However, it also has disadvantages such as security issues, it can cause job loss and make us dependent on technology, in the educational field we can see a decline in the quality of learning in students because they do not take the trouble to review their work and only submit the first thing that AI produces. If we weigh the positives and negatives, in my opinion, Generative Artificial Intelligence is more beneficial; it just needs to be used properly.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) is already part of everyday life in the United States, facilitating many tasks and making life more convenient. Many people use assistants like ChatGPT or Google Assistant to answer questions, organize their routines, or even generate creative ideas. There are also tools like Midjourney or DALL·E that create images from descriptions, or platforms that generate personalized music and videos. Furthermore, GAI is revolutionizing online commerce, recommending products based on each user's tastes and optimizing the shopping experience. In education, it enables more flexible learning tailored to each student, helping with research, summaries, and personalized tutoring, even outside of the classroom.

Using GAI has many advantages, such as saving time, improving productivity, and offering more personalized experiences. But there are also challenges, such as data privacy, the risk of over-reliance on technology, and the misinformation that some algorithms can generate. In education, although these tools can be very helpful, it's also important that students don't become accustomed to relying on them for everything, as this could impair their ability to think critically and be independent. In my opinion, GIS is having a positive impact in the United States, provided it's used responsibly and its potential ethical and social risks are taken into account.

Paragraph 1

The use of Generative Artificial Intelligence has increased exponentially since the announcement of easily accessible Intelligences, such as ChatGPT, or more recently Copilot and Gemini.

Perception of the Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) in the U.S.

Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) has transformed the daily lives of U.S. citizens in various fields. At home, virtual assistants like Alexa and Siri facilitate everyday tasks such as calendar organization and online shopping. Additionally, entertainment platforms like Netflix and Spotify use GAI algorithms to personalize content recommendations. In the workplace, task automation enhances efficiency in sectors such as marketing and design. In the educational system, GAI has enabled personalized learning through tools such as educational chatbots and text generators, which help students with research and comprehension of academic materials.

The use of GAI brings both advantages and challenges. Among its benefits are time optimization, accessibility to quality information, and the strengthening of personalized learning. However, it also raises concerns related to misinformation, technological dependence, and user privacy. In my opinion, the impact of GAI in the U.S. is mostly positive, provided that proper regulations are implemented to mitigate its risks. The key is to promote responsible use of these technologies to maximize their benefits without compromising security and equity in society.

Enlace permanente

Within the United States, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) is an essential component in various daily activities. To begin with, virtual assistants such as Alexa, Siri, and Google Assistant help users with reminders, information searches, and control of smart devices. In the field of content production, ChatGPT, DALL·E, and Midjourney, among others, enable precise text generation as well as rapid image and video creation. Additionally, Artificial Intelligence enhances automation in both businesses and households, optimizing tasks from email management and weekly planners to meeting organization. In e-commerce, AI algorithms analyze customer purchase behaviors to offer personalized recommendations on platforms like Amazon and eBay. In the entertainment industry, GAI enriches product personalization on platforms such as Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube, providing movies, music, and videos tailored to user preferences. In the educational sector, GAI adapts curricula to students' needs through adaptive platforms, educational materials, and research assistance.

Students benefit from AI-powered tools such as Khan Academy's tutor Khanmigo and Grammarly, which assist in writing and text analysis, while AI-driven learning models offer personalized education. These technologies tailor content to each student's needs and learning pace, thus supporting distance education and expanding access to knowledge.

The use of GAI presents both benefits and challenges. Among its advantages are efficiency and accessibility, as it automates work, reduces time consumption, and directly enhances productivity across different sectors. It also democratizes access to information and learning, benefiting people in remote areas or those with physical disabilities. On the other hand, it raises concerns about algorithmic bias, data privacy, and technological dependence. AI models can unintentionally replicate social inequalities by reinforcing biases inherent in their training data. Additionally, the massive collection of data heightens concerns about information security and the potential misuse of personal data.

Overall, I believe GAI has a positive impact in the U.S., as it fosters innovation in multiple fields. However, without proper regulations and ethical frameworks, its adverse effects could go unchecked, potentially limiting fair and secure access for everyone.

I have always considered that the United States has been at the forefront of technology, with major applications from companies such as Apple, Meta, Tesla, Google, and Amazon, which have revolutionized the daily lives of American citizens.

English

This extends to different areas, from planning a calendar to organize daily activities, using voice commands to request personalized assistance, GPS for finding directions, to tools like ChatGPT for improving text writing, among others. All these technologies enable people to make decisions and solve problems with more objective information.

In educational terms, artificial intelligence has marked a significant advancement for American students, promoting continuous learning and allowing them to adapt to new data and changing circumstances. It also enhances personalized learning by adjusting educational content to the specific needs of each student. This is beneficial for students, teachers, and schools with limited resources. With this approach, students can progress at their own pace, engage in activities that match their learning style, and develop greater autonomy in their education. Additionally, the use of AI assistants helps differentiate tasks and create adaptive exercises based on data, improving the learning experience without significantly increasing teachers' workload.

That being said, while the benefits of AI are undeniably practical in students' lives, the challenges can be significant. One major issue is the excessive dependence on these tools, which sometimes limits the development of critical thinking skills necessary for problem-solving.

Personally, I believe that artificial intelligence in the United States and worldwide has a largely positive impact, as it fosters innovation and provides access to up-to-date information. However, it is essential to establish regulations that promote the responsible use of technology to ensure that its benefits are utilized ethically and equitably.

Ariana B.

1) How does global learning--leading up to and during the COIL experience--play a role in the future of educational systems in the United States?

I’m worried that in today’s political climate global learning will not be something is seen as valuable to improve upon. There is an arrogance in the U.S. that we are better so that many people don’t see the benefit of looking at anything through a global lens. I think this is a huge mistake. There are many countries doing things better than we are while being more humble and empathetic while doing so. My experience has been that the teachers that value a global perspective are multi-talented educators that often find other better paying jobs, thereby depriving the educational system of their perspective and expertise.

2) Share two similarities and two differences you found regarding technology in teaching and learning between the United States and at least two other countries.

I’ve seen a lot of similarities around technology in education across multiple countries. In both Mexico and Northern Ireland digital literacy is something that is also valued and seen as imperative to raise students that are digital citizens of the future. All three countries also suffer from a lack of educator training. Professional development in technology is a critical piece that needs a solution sooner rather than later. With AI already here, there is even more training that needs to be done. As soon as training is actually created and delivered for a new technology, it becomes obsolete and there is another new technology to take its place.

In my readings and interactions since June 2024 in Northern Ireland to today, it seems that there are two very big differences between the U.S. and some other countries. In other countries, there seems to be corporate investment in digital literacy infrastructure and training in a way that I don’t hear about in the U.S. The almighty dollar is so valued here that no one wants to invest in digital technology. It seems to be the norm in other countries, so even the same company that might invest in say Northern Ireland, won’t make that investment in the U. S. Other countries like Mexico, Singapore, Germany, and Brazil understand that providing digital literacy training for the current workforce needs to be a priority. Only recently has this begun to be noticed in Arkansas. Even then, it seems like everyone wants a piece of the “pie” of funding to provide training, but little oversight is provided to ensure the training is appropriate, easily available, and relevant to today’s workers.

3) Share how the COIL experience challenged or complicated your perspective on your global competencies. (Refer back to the first course assignment "Globalization in Action: Planning for Schooling and the Self" for inspiration.)

My experiences in Northern Ireland and the COIL experience with the students from Mexico have broadened my perspective, but I also was struck by how similar we all are. We are struggling with some of the same things in education across cultures. Some things that seem like the smallest of differences can have a large impact. One of my granddaughter’s friends is Mexican. She was dropped off for a birthday party an hour late. The party was only 1 ½ hours, so it was almost over when she got there. The friend was also often late for soccer practice. That’s when I first realized that time is more flexible in Mexico. Being late in the U.S. is almost seen as unforgivable. This seems like a small thing but can have a large impact on the Hispanic kids.

In our last COIl meeting, I loved how the Mexican students were so free and expressive in their comments. I feel like we are more reserved for the most part in what we say. We are afraid of saying the “wrong” thing. I particularly notice this in my own students. I loved “watching” Cludia talk. Her face was so animated and her gestures were mesmerizing. I had no clue what she was saying, but I enjoyed it! I feel like the COIL experience has subtlety shifted my entire framework for considering global perspectives. I’m going to try to not look through my own bias lens of “appropriate” behavior.

My COIL Experience

Global Learning and Educational Systems

My COIL experience revealed how crucial global collaboration is for the future of education in the United States. Working with international colleagues showed me that meaningful educational change, especially regarding AI integration. It requires diverse perspectives and cross-border partnerships. When educators from different countries shared their approaches to technology, I saw how we could learn from each other instead of struggling with the same challenges in isolation. I firmly believe that to utilize AI's potential to enhance teaching rather than replace educators, we need this global exchange of ideas and practices. My experience taught me that the most innovative solutions emerge when we combine insights from different educational systems and cultural contexts.

Technology Comparisons Across Borders

Through my COIL collaborations, I noticed striking similarities and differences in how various countries approach educational technology. In both the U.S. and partner countries, teachers share concerns about professional development. We all worry about developing adequate skills for successful AI implementation. Similarly, educators worldwide view technology as a tool to enhance teaching rather than replace human connection. Mexican educators emphasized culturally responsive technology integration in ways I rarely see in U.S. discussions (but it could just be my little bubble), particularly their focus on respecting indigenous communities where as I feel that the U.S. conversations about educational equity often remain theoretical and kind of capitalized. These differences made me reflect on how we might better address specific needs of underserved communities in American and global education.

Personal Growth and Challenges

My COIL experience challenged my self-perception of global competency. What humbled me most was discovering my Spanish language skills were far less developed than I'd believed (Element #7). Haha. Simple conversations became complex negotiations of meaning, requiring patience I didn't know I needed. This linguistic struggle gave me newfound empathy for English language learners in American classrooms and highlighted the enormous challenge of making education truly accessible across language barriers. Despite these communication hurdles, working toward our common goal of enhancing education through technology broke down barriers between us. The experience taught me that effective global collaboration isn't about erasing differences but leveraging diverse perspectives to create better solutions than any of us could develop alone. This lesson will forever change how I approach both technology integration and cross-cultural collaboration in my professional practice.

1) How does global learning--leading up to and during the COIL experience--play a role in the future of educational systems in the United States?

Global learning is perhaps the most vital educational journey United States citizens need to take, especially in today’s genuine nightmare of nationalism, extremism, and horrendous, vile leadership. Global learning allows citizens to interact with real people beyond the scope of their safe bubble of normality, and forces them to recognize that there are other people in the world living lives just as intricate and important as their own. It puts on display an irrefutable fact that other parts of the world can be similar to their own. That sometimes the differences are not glaring. That sometimes it can be better than what they know. If education was global from the earliest parts of a United state’s citizen’s educational experience, I think the world would be a better, more inclusive, honest place.

2) Share two similarities and two differences you found regarding technology in teaching and learning between the United States and at least two other countries.

Across multiple sources I used for this course and another course this semester, I found that the number one thing educators across the world want and feel the same about is training for whatever is going to be implemented. Teachers are happy, often excited to engage in new strategies and technologies in the United States or any country in the world…as long as they are trained how to use it/implement it. Without that, across the board teachers show apprehension and frustration, which leads to poor learning outcomes. Something that is different between the united states and other countries, namely Japan and China, is that some governments are taking a unified approach to integrate technology training into the foundational learning for teachers. Unfortunately I do not believe that this will happen in the united states anytime soon. Regardless of the ineptitude of the current national administration, the United States is too large and not homogeneous enough for this to work successfully.

3) Share how the COIL experience challenged or complicated your perspective on your global competencies. (Refer back to the first course assignment "Globalization in Action: Planning for Schooling and the Self" for inspiration.)

The COIL experience did not really challenge my perspective of my global competencies. From a very early age, I have always been aware of other countries, different cultures, and that people can and do live different lives than me. I thank my parents and PBS, among other resources. It did make me want to learn a second language. I felt pretty helpless during the COIL interactions sometimes. Though I did learn enough to respond to a few things from Dr. Faidley when he spoke Spanish to me, so that was neat.
