I really enjoyed rereading the first few chapters today! My favorite part of these chapters is getting to know Meg, Charles Wallace, and Calvin. I love how Charles Wallace describes Meg to be "not really one thing or the other." I've always thought of her as the bridge, with one foot firmly planted in the ordinary world and one foot in the "new" and "different" space that Charles Wallace inhabits. I also love the scene with Meg and Calvin. Not only does he elicit some necessary backstory about her father with his questions, but also he demonstrates that he can be curious and caring at the same time. Meg goes from being defensive to breaking down in tears. During school, on page 25, she says to Mr. Jenkins, "When she [her mother] tells me that my father isn't coming home, I'll believe it. As long as she says Father is coming home, then I'll believe that." I think this shows that Meg is stubborn, yet easily persuaded in some ways. She refuses to let Mr. Jenkins question Meg's beliefs, yet is very easily swayed by her mother's words, possibly by the trust and bond between them, and/or Meg's lost feelings when she's unable to understand or know something. There was also a small snippet on the same page that I found a little contradictory; ""I do face facts," Meg said. "They're a lot easier to face than people, I can tell you."" yet a later passage says, "Mr. Jenkins sighed. "Do you enjoy being the most belligerent, uncooperative child in school?" Meg ignored this." It seems that she doesn't directly face as many facts as she says, which I found funny when I read it.
She's also very emotional, like on, again, page 25, ""Leave my father out of it!" Meg shouted."
Meg is very confident in her words and will be fierce where she needs to. Mrs. Who was letting on that soon there would be an event in their future, and that confused Meg and Calvin. Calvin's questions are important because they help the reader better understand why her dad is gone. Though I don't know how Fortinbras takes place in the story quite yet, I know he will play a big role as the story goes on. I also find Charles Wallace very interesting, considering that he is so young and however I'm finding that he is my favorite character. I used to think that this book may not be something that I would enjoy to read, but now I truly love it! So thank you Liv for starting the global book club because without I never would have given this book a chance.

However after reading the book several times, I now interpret her actions at the beginning as showing her bravery. I feel like people in our society hide their emotions and don't let their hurt show for fear of looking weak or vulnerable. In this way, Meg is brave by showing her true self, without holding anything back. She has every reason to be angry, upset, heartbroken, confused, etc., and she shouldn't feel pressured to hold that in! Happy reading!

I like this theme of “control” in dystopian novels because they give way to a good story. One person could be fed up with the system, or they, like the boy who kept dropping the rubber ball, could mess up in their duties as a citizen and get into bigger conflict because of it. If it was the gap between time, the time is stopped, so the words can't travel, the heart has stopped beating, and light stopped traveling, making everything black, no force is traveling so there is no feel, and I support the gap in time the most. 
The planet of Camazotz makes me feel that I'm in modere planet, as well because, there is no people walking, making the planet icy cold. In basic stories such as fairy tales like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, and Cinderella, characters are black and white; it's good vs. evil, but I think that this story is going to have shades of grey in between. The Man might not be as bad as we think. So far, anything he's done had a wrong 'tone' to it, like taking over Charles' mind and heart, and feeding the kids fake food that, without the illusion that is its taste, would taste like sand. But these actions have had good outcomes to it, like leading Meg to her father, and preventing Meg from interfering with the Man with the Red Eyes taking over Charles (the first time, she practically gave Charles a concussion, and I wouldn't want her to injure him any more). These cause-and-effect actions might show that the Man is neutral, rather than good or evil.
