On Tuesday, December 3rd, 2019, they announced a new way to report crimes, an app made by Navigate360 & P3TIPS, called P3TIPS. This app was made to assist individuals in providing tips for crimes through a phone app for android and apple, with the goal being that individuals can report crimes anonymously and attach images, as well as receive updates on crimes nearby. It is widely used internationally in parts of the U.S, Caribbean and Europe. This information is according to the Belize Crime Observatory's annual report, published on January 6th, 2021. However, most of the crimes are still due to gun violence, linked to gang violence. The issue is that although there are resources in place such as hotlines and apps used to report crimes, most people still do not trust in giving their report and end up choosing not to do so at all. Another reason why they may not report these crimes is because they may have a relative involved in these crimes committed by gangs, and choose not to have their family member imprisoned. These instances cause this type of crime to keep occurring, and the cycle continues. Kalist and Daniel Y. Lee of Shippensburg University, Pennsylvania, concluded that uncommon names are likely not the cause of crime but correlated with factors that increase the tendency toward juvenile delinquency, such as a disadvantaged home environment and residence in an area with low socioeconomic status. They do not see prisoners as animals and disregard them as most people would, but instead they treat them with enough respect and do their best to improve living standards compared to what it was before. An example is placing running water, where before there was no running water for the inmates to use. There is still much improvement that needs to be done, but they have a good start with providing basic amenities in order to move towards a reform. I think this should be a basic standard for all prisons, because if you would have someone living in those conditions, you might as well have given them a death sentence. 
Another strength is that they take initiative to provide resources for reform and reprogram these individuals. An example of this is that they offer programs that teach skills and trade to inmates that have proven to have consistent good conduct. One of these programs is a carpentry program that teaches them woodwork on other skills on a daily interval. Inmates can also be educated with an academic program. These are just examples of how the foundation aims to reform these inmates and prepare them for reintegration in society. Although it may seem strange to want to reintegrate incarcerated individuals in society to some, I think they deserve a second chance if they have shown they want to improve and never return to prison again.
Lastly, another strength that the Kolbe Foundation has brought to the prison system is the assertion of religion, specifically Christianity. With a church in place for inmates to attend, and daily prayer and other activities that bring people closer to God, there have surprisingly been many cases where murderous individuals no longer display the violent past they once had, and in place, a wiser person with a calm demeanor. Personally, I do believe in introducing religion, but I do not like the idea of it being overbearing. Less than 5% of the global population lives in the U.S, but the country has more than 20% of the world's prison population. Roughly 2.12 people were incarcerated in the U.S in 2020. People are arrested and tried for minimal offenses to the public eye, such as being in possession of marijuana without a permit, and often sentenced to several years in prison because of it. The justice system also has issues where most inmates are often released because in many cities and states, money frequently decides who is freed or gets stuck in prison. This can cause a problem for poor individuals who cannot afford the ridiculously high bails, and are stuck unable to provide for families, and in the future, continue the cycle of imprisonment and debt. This is why there are many still in prison awaiting trial, contributing to the numbers of incarcerated people. ]]> 2021-12-04 23:18:07 UTC https://padlet.com/alejandroazariel/3h7jsy6ukqn9ph7m/wish/1929079043 alejandroazariel https://padlet.com/alejandroazariel/3h7jsy6ukqn9ph7m/wish/1929127496 San Jose Nuevo Palmar village was going through a series of shootings and robberies in December 2012, and as a result, a group of individuals took action and formed the group called the San Jose Nuevo Palmar Jaguar's Neighborhood watch.
There were 2 shooting incidents that were connected within the village and luckily nobody was injured, but there could have been a worse outcome. The preventative measures this group took to stop crime was through daily patrols at all hours of the night, with intervals, acquiring lamp posts for darker areas, and involving the community in activities to strengthen the relationship for the future. They also made some members of the group special constables, and later then went to become police officers, where they could better assist in situations. Between the years 2012 and 2016 they were most active, and I do remember that crime was at it's highest here at that time, but with the neighborhood watch, it all calmed down. It still exists but is not as active anymore since some members left the group. I believe that every community should have a neighborhood watch group as well as have cooperative residents that would do their part in reporting suspicious activity.
