Local Places for Nature is back! Apply for a free garden package today

We’re excited to announce that applications for Local Places for Nature have reopened.

Last year, more than 500 green spaces across the country were created, restored and enhanced. Community groups and organisations of all shapes and sizes got involved – from disability charities and youth groups to social enterprises and carer groups.

Now, thanks to support from Welsh Government, we’ve got hundreds more packages available. This is your chance to reverse nature’s decline and provide an important boost to the well-being of your local community at the same time.

Each pre-paid package includes native plants, tools and other materials. We’ll handle the orders and deliveries, and our project officers will even provide support on the ground.

Our packages this year fall into two categories:

1. Starter packages for community or volunteer groups looking to create a Pollinator Garden, Fruit and Herb Garden, or Urban Garden.

2. Development packages for community-based organisations that are ready to take on a bigger project and build a Food Growing Garden or Wildlife Garden.

In 2021-22, priority will be given to projects in urban, deprived areas with little or no access to nature. We’re also really keen to welcome applications from underrepresented groups across Wales.

It’s a simple application process. Just visit the Keep Wales Tidy website, choose your package, read through the guidance, and download and complete the application form.

The first application deadline is midday on Friday 30 April. We’re expecting packages to get snapped up fast, so make sure you get your application in soon!

If you have any questions, please get in touch with our Local Places for Nature team – email nature@keepwalestidy.cymru

https://www.keepwalestidy.cymru/.../nature-starter-community

https://www.keepwalestidy.cymru/.../nature-development

https://www.keepwalestidy.cymru/pages/category/nature

Launch of BT HOME Essentials

This will be a market leading social tariff connecting those on low income with affordable fibre broadband and calls. The new low cost tariff comes as BT research reveals that since the pandemic almost three quarters (74%) of Brits would not find it easy to improve their financial situation without connectivity,¹ and the majority (79%) of financially vulnerable people rely on broadband connectivity to manage household finances.²

Available to those on Universal Credit and a range of other means-tested benefits*, BT Home Essentials is intended to meet the demands of the modern home, providing futureproof fibre connectivity at a time when online resources have never been more important. BT research has found that three times as many people say they could not go without broadband (67%) versus public transport (20%).¹

BT Home Essentials is a separate and improved social tariff compared to BT’s initial version, BT Basic, which was launched in 2008. Home Essentials provides an average of 36 Mbps download speeds and 700 minutes of calls for £15 a month, around half the price of a standard fibre and calls package. Alternatively, eligible customers can also opt for average speeds of 67 Mbps and unlimited calls for £20 per month. The lowest price equivalent standard BT broadband package costs £32.99 a month, with an additional £15 for our unlimited calls plan – this means BT Home Essentials customers choosing the £20 option can save over £330 a year.4
</sup>

We will continue to work closely with the Welsh Government to support families, as we have done through BT’s ‘Lockdown Learning’. Across the UK, we have provided connectivity to over 175,000 families, to help children to continue learning from home. BT Home Essentials will provide an on-going affordable option for families to receive fast broadband for the whole household.

I have included further information below.

Kind regards,

Nick

Further Information:

*BT Home Essentials is only for eligible customers which includes those on Universal Credit and people receiving Pension Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Income Support, and Employment and Support Allowance

¹ Based on a survey interviewing a nationally representative sample of c.2,000 GB adults – April 2021

² Based on an online survey among mobile and broadband owners whose household receive a benefit or tax credit. Actual speed will be dependent on location, phone line, home wiring, wi-fi connection and time of day.

Learning from the community response to COVID-19 in Wales

The Research and Evaluation Division at Public Health Wales, in partnership with University of Bristol and Wales Council for Voluntary Action, have launched a national survey to hear from volunteers and those who have informally given up their time to help their communities respond to COVID-19.

Since the start of the pandemic, we know that record numbers of people in Wales have given up their time freely to help other people in their community, through acts like shopping, picking up medicines, cooking a meal or providing some care and emotional support. We also know that this kind of grassroots voluntary action is really important when it comes to building strong and supportive communities and for the wellbeing of individuals.

But we want to better understand what helped people to respond in this way; and for others what were the barriers to doing as much as they may have wanted.
Adults who have volunteered in any way, from group-based support to assisting a neighbour, are invited to take part our short survey here, to contribute to this important research. The survey is hosted by Strategic Research and Insight and is open to people aged 18 years and above, living and/or working/or volunteering in Wales.

The findings will help Public Health Wales and its partners to better understand and inform their planning to improve population health in Wales. It will also help to ensure community-led volunteering can be better supported in future.

This project is supported by the Health Foundation, committed to bringing about better health and health care for people in the UK.
