This video was produced by Highlights Kids. The clip is about 11 and a half minutes long. Step by step they reveal different skills and tasks for a certain career. This is best suited for Elementary specifically but could be used with some middle school students. Its purpose is for students to make students aware of what each job is like so they can pick based on their skills and interests jobs they might like to pursue.

This site would be most relevant for middles school to sophomore high school students. This site gives students the ability to continue to explore those jobs that may have interested them during the career awareness phase of learning to start to assess what will fit best with their skills and interest.

This video provides an overview of the Project Search internship program for individuals with disabilities within the Virginia hospital system. It illustrates and describes the tasks students perform each day within a hospital setting. Some of the video clips show students preparing patient rooms, inventorying supplies, and working in the kitchen and sterilization departments, while other clips show interviews of the students’ job coaches discussing the benefits of the program that they have witnessed for their students. The video stresses the importance of matching students’ strengths, interests, and preferences to the jobs the students have at the hospital. For example, one student who possesses very good communication skills and is very outgoing is working in patient care because it matched her individual strengths and interests, while another student who possesses good math skills is working in inventory control because it gives him a chance to use his skills and is in an area of work he enjoys. The video goes on to discuss the growth in the skill sets of the students over the course of the program such as their increase in communication skills and students in the program reflect on how the experience has allowed them to learn new skills and become more mature and responsible employees. One student’s parent also shares her opinion of the program and the staff.

Work-based learning experiences are an important career preparation component of a comprehensive career development program for students and increase several important job skills like problem-solving, completing tasks to criterion levels, and social skills (Morningstar and Clavenna-Deane, 2018). Students within the Project-Search program are actively learning these skills through both classroom activities and while actually performing their jobs in the hospital environment. Additionally, Luecking (2020) discusses the importance of providing students with quality work experiences. This typically means an organized relationship with a partner business and excellent support systems. Project Search exemplifies a quality work experience for its students resulting in excellent outcomes for the students.

This is a short and straight to the point video. It provides an introductory view for students to begin thinking about what they would like to do for a career. It provides many questions to get students to begin thinking about types of careers and how what they are doing now (i.e. favorite school subject) could lead to a career. This would be a great video to give students thought provoking questions to begin their exploration of types of careers that may interest them. With it being a shorter video, with great questions, students will remain engaged and begin the exploration process to learning about careers they may like.

Career awareness is the focus of gaining initial knowledge of "work, careers, and jobs" and begins as early as pre-school and is refined through middle school and early high school years (Morningstar & Clavenna-Deane, 2017). An elementary school in Spokane, Washington hosts a career fair themed after Dr. Seuss's "Oh the Places You'll Go." The career fair allowed students to explore careers in their community, going beyond those that they are familiar with (i.e., teacher, lawyer, doctor), in a developmentally appropriate way. As students navigated the fair, they became more aware of career opportunities in their community, including business, science, and the arts.

Career Exploration - Job Shadowing

After learning about specific career interests, high school students may find a benefit to exploring careers through job shadowing. Job shadowing allows students to become familiar with job responsibilities and interview workers in a career area of interest (Morningstar & Clavenna-Deane, 2017). The Institute of Adult Learning of Singapore outlines specific professional obligations for all parties involved-- the manager, worker being shadowed and the individual shadowing. To set up a successful shadowing experience, the manager should first welcome the individual shadowing into the space, offer a tour, and introduce the individual shadowing to the worker they will be observing. The worker that is being observed should communicate with the person shadowing and answer any questions they may have. The person shadowing is responsible for taking notes and asking questions to further understand. At the very end of the session, the manager should reflect with the individual shadowing to determine what other information they may need to be successful. The Institute of Adult Learning of Singapore also created a "Wrong Way" to job shadow video (linked in the comment to this post). A transition educator could use both videos -- the "Right Way" and "Wrong Way" -- to prepare students for professionalism on a job shadowing opportunity though learning examples and nonexamples of effective job shadowing. A transition educator could also use these videos when creating ecological inventories with new school-business partnerships and explaining to businesses the necessary steps to job shadowing.

In this video we learn about work-based learning. It interviews different students who have gone through the experience and shows students in a variety of career learning skills of the workplace in a hands on learning experience. This would be most relevant to junior, senior and students who are attending 18-22 year old transition programs. Work-based learning is where students can take all they have learned through on campus job skills activities and put them into practical use. This type of activity gives students the time to assess what skills they have and what they still need to acquire to be successful in their chosen careers.

This video describes the Career Immersion Program at the Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences. The purpose of the program is to give high school juniors and seniors an opportunity to experience various careers within the healthcare industry that are different than the typical nurse and doctor professions. In the video, Mayo Clinic Program Supervisors explain how students have the opportunity to experience typical job duties and participate in hands-on learning activities specific to an available career within the clinic. Specifically, students have the opportunity to participate in activities in over 15 different career pathways within the School of Health Sciences such as Radiology, Physiology, and Surgical Assistant. The video shows students engaging in activities like preparing physical therapy routines, using surgical instruments on mannequins, and working in labs. Students in the program then shared thoughts on their experiences and what they learned about each of the career areas in which they participated. Program administrators then discussed what past participants in the program thought about the program and mentioned the career pathways some of them explored after completing the program.

The program described in the video illustrates students engaged in career exploration. While the students are becoming more aware of specific careers in the healthcare industry, it appears that the students were already pursuing careers in the Health and Sciences career cluster and were further exploring other careers within that industry that were not as well known. Morningstar and Clavenna-Deane (2018), describe career exploration as a time when students learn about the specifics of various careers and begin to learn about the specifics of the educational requirements needed to obtain specific careers. Students in this video were learning about specific job responsibilities and how specific equipment and tools are used in each of the careers which coincides with Morningstar and Clavenna-Deane’s description and is different from career awareness activities which typically happens early in a student’s school career and focuses on discovering why we work and the existence of careers from multiple career pathways.

This video describes a career expo held in Marion County Florida. The expo was a partnership between many area businesses and the Marion County public school systems. Middle school and high school students were able to talk with various businesses about the careers their specific businesses offered, as well as discuss important job skills that students will need no matter what career they enter. Organizers of the event discuss the benefits of the expo to the students, which include being able to interact with business owners and leaders and in some cases engage in hands on learning experiences with some of the employers. The video shows students sitting in round table discussions with business personnel and discussing how to move forward with their career exploration. Students are also interviewed in the video and discuss how the expo helped them clarify their career pathway.

Career development is a process that occurs throughout an individual’s early development and while career awareness activities typically begin in a student’s early school years, the process does not always happen in a specific order. Luecking (2020), suggests that no matter the order of a students career development process, career experiences are extremely important to an individual becoming self-aware about their strengths and interests. Luecking also stresses the importance of career awareness activities like touring community business or having guest speakers come into schools to talk about career pathways. The career expo shown in the video is one such activity that provided the students the opportunity to talk with multiple businesses across a wide spectrum of career areas to help them decide possible career pathways.

Career Preparation - Summer Work Experience

Career preparation involves learning and practicing on-the-job skills while creating a plan for postsecondary training and education (Morningstar & Clavenna-Deane, 2017). The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, in collaboration with Missouri Vocational Rehabilitation, offers the Summer Work Experience program for individuals 16 or older to gain work experience in a supported environment. To the extent possible, providers match individuals with work related to their career interests. A few examples of employment opportunities shared in the video include: a mechanic shop, bakery, and grocery store. Through their work experiences, students begin to refine specific employability skills for their career of interest while earning a paycheck. In the video, students share what they spend their paychecks on-- some buy food and clothes, while others save. Working for a paycheck gives students a greater purpose for their work and helps them gain experience towards their greater career plan.

This elementary school teacher is interviewing her students for classroom jobs. The teacher has her students share their strengths related to the job they are applying for, encourages them to dress up for their interviews, share their resumes, and identify the responsibilities of the jobs they are applying for. This basic interview teaches her student that a person needs to interview for a job before being hired. This type of career awareness in elementary school sets the stage for developing more elaborate interview skills in the career preparation phase of career development.

This video gives insight into what 8th graders can learn and gain when attending a career fair. Career awareness is about gaining beginning knowledge about work and jobs. By having 8th graders attend a career fair they can begin to see what type of jobs or careers are out there. It gives them an opportunity to interview employers to learn what is needed to apply for that type of job and learn what job tasks and skills are needed for a job. This is a great exploration activity for students in middle to do, it helps to broaden their vision of types of careers out there. As well as, could help them prepare for high school by knowing what type of classes they need in order to be successful in a career that interests them.
