At the beginning of the semester, my primary writing goals were to become more confident in academic writing, improve my revision strategies, and strengthen my ability to integrate sources effectively. Looking back, I believe I made meaningful progress in each of these areas, especially in developing a clearer writing voice and learning how to tailor my tone and content for different audiences and purposes. One of the skills I improved most was organization—particularly how to structure an argument logically and cohesively. In my research paper, I worked hard to ensure that each paragraph built upon the previous one, using transitions and topic sentences more intentionally. This piece also shows how my ability to incorporate research improved. I learned to evaluate sources more critically and use them to support—not replace—my own analysis. A major challenge was learning how to revise meaningfully, not just make surface-level edits. Peer and instructor feedback helped me identify patterns in my writing, like overusing passive voice or lacking clarity in thesis statements. One assignment that evolved significantly during revision was my rhetorical analysis essay. After receiving feedback, I reorganized entire sections and clarified my claims, which made the argument stronger and more focused. Overall, I’ve become more confident in my writing abilities. I’ve learned to see writing as a process and have become more comfortable taking risks and embracing revision. This semester has helped me find a stronger sense of voice and purpose in my writing.

In my Research Proposal Peer Review, I worked on asking better questions about my topic. At first, my question was too big and hard to research. After getting feedback from my classmates, I learned how to make it more focused and clear. Their comments helped me think more about what I really wanted to find out and why it matters. I used their suggestions to change my question and improve my proposal. This helped me think more deeply and made my final research paper a lot stronger.

In the "Shitty First Drafts" Worksheet, I learned how to look at sources more carefully and

decide if they were useful and trustworthy. While planning my draft, I had to think about which facts and ideas really helped my topic and which ones didn’t. I also made sure to use information from sources that were fair and not just someone’s opinion. This helped me understand the difference between good sources and weak ones. Using this worksheet helped me practice being more careful and responsible when choosing and using research in my writing.

Artifact: Brainstorming: 3 Ideas

Rationale:

In my Brainstorming: 3 Ideas assignment, I explored different ways to write about a topic by thinking about who my audience would be and what kind of writing fit best. Each idea had a different style—like a research paper, a blog, or a letter—which helped me see how writing changes depending on the purpose. This showed me how to make smart choices about what to include, how to say it, and which format to use. It helped me understand that writing isn't one-size-fits-all and that I can use different styles to share my ideas clearly.

In the Socratic Seminar about "What Writing Is" and "Why I Write," I shared my own ideas by thinking about what the authors said and how it connected to my own experiences. I used quotes from both readings to back up my thoughts and compared the two writers' points of view. This helped me come up with new ideas about why people write and how writing can be powerful. I learned how to join a bigger conversation by using evidence and my own thinking together. It showed me how to build knowledge from what I read and discuss.

In my Discussion & Conclusion section, I used feedback from my teacher and classmates to make my writing stronger. At first, my ideas were not clear, and I didn’t explain my main points very well. After getting comments, I went back and added more details, fixed confusing parts, and made sure my conclusion really matched what I talked about in the paper. I learned how to listen to feedback and use it to improve my work. This helped me understand that good writing takes time and that revising is an important part of the process.
