Always think before you speak ). Holden was probably told by his mother to think before speaking, but holden always just speaks his mind. This gets him into trouble when he calls Sally a pain in the ass. I envisioned this in the scene where, Holden explains that his brother died. The song talks about how he would want to spend the rest of his life with someone that he loves. I think this is Pheobe in Holdens case, which I believe is the reason why he stayed rather than leaving like he said was going to do. Later in the song, he talks about how we wait for our friends and family to disappear with fame or fire. This is DB, who went to hollywood to live out his days, and allie who died, not in a literal fire but one of the heart and soul. Holden lost both DB and Allie, and is holding on to Pheobe.
