What would the impact of a good group profile be?
The more we understand the way our students work the more effective we can be in ensuring their learning is successful. When we have an in depth understanding of how our students learn there is a major impact on how a teacher plans for a lesson and what resources they use.

How would it be used?
There are multiple styles and tools which can be used within teaching and a group profile can show a teacher which is these is appropriate and effective for each student to learn. A teacher should use a variety of learning styles but with a group profile they can be confident they are working in the best way for that student.

Where would this be stored?
A group profile should be put onto each lesson plan and in an accessible place for the teacher to refer to easily.

What information should it include?
Additional needs such as LD or MH. Any ethical considerations. Language barriers. Behavioral issues, learning styles, attainment records, current qualification level, any issues out of school/college. Are they receiving any additional support within school/college - educational or financial.

Example of a group profile:
I teach two Year 2 groups. All of my students are female and are between the ages of 17 – 19. Some of the students are currently retaking the level 3 BTEC. I have a number of students who suffer with mental health issues, specifically anxiety issues. This is something I keep an eye on in lesson. In addition, one of my students suffers from bipolar which is presents unpredictable behavior within lessons.
Some of my students access the learning support staff at College and I liaise with them if i have any concerns.
The entry requirement is a GCSE in English and Maths at grade C or above. The students also have to have successfully passed Year 1 of the BTEC course and have completed a placement within a health and social care setting to be able to start Year 2.
Through initial assessments my group were made up of a majority visual and verbal learning styles. I therefore use a variety within my teaching. “

What is a Group Profile?

As a teacher, it is important that we know our students and their needs for effective learning to take place within the classroom. A group profile allows us to collate data and information, to proactively identify the needs of the individual, in order to maximize the learning opportunity for each student within the context of the group.

Identify what information it should include:

A group profile may include the following:

· Name/Student No.

· Male/Female

· Previous School

· Progression/Career aim

· Medical/SEND/EAL/Financial support information

· GCSE average

· Attendance breakdown

· Literacy and Numeracy (BKSB levels)

· Individual Literacy Target

· Learning styles

· Attainment record (e.g. GCSE Art grade)

· National Grade

· Target Grade for subject

· KAPS (Key Assessment Points/Effort grades)

· Weekly tracking (e.g. homework, grading…)

Where would this be stored?

The format of a group profile is the choosing of the individual teacher. I have found that using an Excel document allows me to easily edit information, update and keep track of student progress throughout the academic year. Additionally, due to the nature of the personal information included within group profiles, they should be stored in a secure place. For example, a lockable cupboard if paper based.

How would it be used? /What would the impact of a good group profile be?

A group profile can be used when planning a lesson to identify key considerations, which could affect student progress if not addressed appropriately:

· Identifying periods of low attendance

· Annotation of support and challenge strategies

· Literacy support

· Colour coding higher/lower ability etc.

If updated regularly and used to support planning, the information on good group profile can be used to differentiate learning activities and maximize progress. In order for differentiation to be effective, the group profile should be a working document and a vital part of teaching and learning.

What is a group profile?
Group profiles are used to list various categories of information on students that a teacher has within their sessions. The categories that are generally found in a group profile include learning styles, additional learning support, entry qualifications, level of study and attendance.

What would the impact of a good group profile be?
A high quality group profile will enable the tutor to plan resources and activities that will be suitable for the whole group of learners as it will take into account any additional learning support the student has along with their learner styles.

What information should it include?
To identify an individual student, their name (and their preferred name if this is different) and their student number should be included so that the various pieces of information can be linked to the particular student. Along with entry qualifications, initial assessment / diagnostic results (such as BKSB), level of study (where a group of learners in the session are at different levels within the same session) and attendance, additional learning support will be included so resources and activities can be incorporated into planning.

How would it be used?
When lesson planning, the profile would be used to ensure ALS is taken into account for any students that require it and is also a method for tracking attendance and progress.

Where should it be stored?
A group profile should be included in the file on the specific class as it will help to generate lesson plans from a scheme of work.

What is a Group Profile?

A group profile is a collection of data kept by teachers and educational centres about learners in their classes. This contains information relating to academic ability gauged from past results (e.g. GCSE), learning styles, initial assessment information from enrolment which will include literacy and numeracy. There will also be information on attendance and medical conditions that need to be considered.

Identify what information it should include?

A group profile should/could include
- name,
- gender
- DOB,
- student number
- medical conditions such as allergies
- Initial assessments (BKSB literacy and numeracy)
- Past academic ability e.g. GCSE results (average points score) (for A level)
- attendance
- electronic markbook data ( homework and assessment points)
- national grade and target grade
- learning styles
- additional support needs ( dyslexia, aspergers etc...)

How would it be used?

It would be used to aid a teacher in planning schemes of work and lessons to meet the needs of the students in the profile and cater for their individual learning needs. To track attendance and performance in week to week activities in order to set targets for improvement.

What would the impact of a good group profile be?

The impact of a good group profile would be to produce effective learning plans, ILP's and targets based on ability and target grades. Also lessons would be varied and diverse to meet the needs of all learners in the group therefore promoting an inclusive learning environment.

Where would it be stored?

Securely as it contains private information relating to students, so in an office in a course folder or separately in its own folder. It should also be contained electronically for ease of access and to amend details. Often the hard copy is simply a printout of the digital one. It also needs to be available in lessons especially for OFSTED inspections.

Useful link:

http://www.edutopia.org/blog/learning-profiles-john-mccarthy

This is an overview of my own teaching profile. No information is included but gives general information.

Teaching Situation

I currently teach A Level Music Technology at Scarborough Sixth Form College. There are three blocks of teaching for each year group (see timetable). My cohort is 8 students in each year AS and A2. The AS year has an equal weighting of 4 male to 4 female learners with varying abilities and the A2 has 6 males and 2 female learners again with varied abilities. The age range of my learners ranges from 16 to 19.

Teaching Group

· The age range is 16-18 and there are no entry requirements.

· Previous experience is an advantage. We state that learners should be able to play basic keyboard or understand the notes. Other instrumental abilities are useful also. Having don’t music production or recording beforehand is not essential but is an advantage in getting to grips with the tasks.

· Most students will have good background in music from GCSE, but perhaps not on technology. Again some knowledge is better than none in this case. But the course starts from the ground up on the tech side to accommodate.

· The range of literacy and numeracy skills is varied. Some learners have poor handwriting which can affect them in an exam. Word processing is used by some in this case. All learners have good ICT skills and are familiar with using computers throughout the educational life. This is good for this type of subject.

· The range of cultures in the group is generally White British and of Christian backgrounds.

· The college expect learners to attend all lessons, and to behave accordingly to their rules and regulations. I have attached a ground rules sheet which covers common aspects of college policy and also homework expectations.

A group profile is a document used to collect information about the learners in our classes. You would have a group profile for every group of learners you teach, this is a document that would provide all the information on the learners needs in one place to help with differentiation and making sure you are making everything suitable to meet the needs of learners. It is important to keep this document updated regularly as it will change as the weeks go by. In my group profiles I have Learners name, student number, initial and diagnostic results, previous grades/levels, EAA, ALS, the level they are enrolled onto it also includes a note section where I can add additional information such as attendance/behaviour issues. I like to have a paper copy of the group profile, but I also store it electronically so that it can be easily updated. The group profile should go hand in hand with the lesson plan so that if your lesson needed to be covered by another member of staff that member of staff would have as much information about those learners as possible so that he/she can meet the needs of the learners, be aware of any issues and ensure the lesson runs smoothly.
