Goldfarb and Tucker from MIT and The University of Toronto conducted a study based upon companies’ intrusive data collection. They question how intrusive this data collection can be, and how it affects their marketing strategies towards the people. The researcher’s study was conducted over multiple separate companies and analyzed how the customer/consumer reacted to these marketing strategies. They concluded that due to all these patents and rights reserved there is an invasion of privacy within modern-day marketing strategies.

What Mr. Dugan focuses on specifically is how skaters seek out sponsorships and how the sponsor can influence the skater’s free speech. The study that Mr. Dugan conducted was interviewing skaters, who had sponsorships, first-hand accounts, as well as magazine articles from skate magazines such as Thrasher Magazine. What Dugan concluded was that whenever a skater was put into a sponsorship situation they were only allowed to post certain things, and use certain brands in order to earn money, therefore these skaters are being censored in order for payment.
