Main Theme from The Hate u Give

I think that the theme from this book is the power of words. Starr spoke out for the change she wanted to see and she worked to achieve it. My favorite quote from the book that relates to this theme is in chapter 14, it says, ”That's the problem. We let people say stuff, and they say it so much that it becomes okay to them and normal for us. What’s the point of having a voice if you're gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn't be?”. I think this is such a powerful statement because it shows how you need to speak out for things that matter. I think that the author did this because so many problems going on today are relating to this and I think it is very admirable to speak out about the controversy of police brutality and much needed justice.

How the theme relates to a quote from The Help

"“It weren’t too loo long before I seen something in me, had changed. A bitter seed was planted inside of me. And I just didn’t feel so, accepting, anymore.” -Kathryn Stockett, The Help
-This quote from The Help relates to the theme of this book which is the power of words and standing up for your beliefs. After Starr saw Khalil got shot she realized how much police brutality impacts her. After she experienced it first hand, she realized she had to unlock the power of her voice and stand up for change instead of being complacent with the issue.

“Others are fighting too, even in the Garden, where sometimes it feels like there’s not a lot worth fighting for. People are realizing and shouting and marching and demanding. They’re not forgetting. I think that’s the most important part.”

This quote on page 443 of The Hate u Give backs up the theme because it represents how people in Garden Heights are not being silent and complacent. They have realized that the power of many voices together is almost unstoppable.

Summary

The book starts with a girl named Starr who lives in Garden heights, but goes to school at a prestigious private school, and goes to a party and sees her childhood friends and very close friend named Khalil. Gunshots were fired at the party and they all ran out. She drove off with Khalil to go home. In the car they talked about Tupac as it was playing and his acronym “T.H.U.G L.I.F.E”. Khalil gets pulled over by officer one fifteen and when Khalil opens the door to check if Starr is okay because she was frozen in fear, he was shot three times. He died and Starr went home to her mom and her dad, who was in a gang and people took very seriously. Starr goes and talks to the police and they later have a trial. They seemed to be attacking starr when she took the stand instead of trying to understand what happened. They decided not to punish the officer who killed Khalil. Starr goes on and leads protests and does a tv interview. Her friends at her private school recognized her voice and they had conflicting views, probably because they had different perspectives. She gets in a physical fight with her best friend Hailey and her boyfriend wasn’t supportive. In one interview she snitched on a gang member and not soon after her dads shop was burned down. Her family moved to a different area where she was safer and Starr promised to never stop being a voice for justice.
