I truly believe that all students can achieve academic success, regardless of their socioeconomic status, if they have teachers who believe in them and challenge them. I want to be that positive figure for my students, constantly reminding them that their voices are heard and that their unique perspectives are valued. I try to make my instruction engaging for my students, and I have found that using educational games and technology in the classroom is a great way to peak students interest and also differentiate my instruction to meet the needs of all of my learners.

Standard VI: Assistive Technologies

Journal Entry of what assistive technology I would incorporate into my lessons if given the opportunity. In the future, if I have a student who has a visual impairment I could use assistive technologies such as an electronic magnifier. Electronic magnifiers allow students to enlarge printed text on paper or monitors. The student holds the magnifier over the text to read, and it can be adjusted as needed. After reviewing the online resource http://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/departments/hiat/ I have discovered that there are many assistive technologies that students can access using Chromebooks. Some examples include, Bookshare which allows students to read books with built-in text to speech. An additional resource that I found, Dragon Naturally Speaking, provides students with the opportunity to use voice recognition software. While I won't be teaching in MCPS next year, my school does have computers that students can use and know about the assistive technologies available online will be a valuable resource for me if I have students who would benefit from these assistive technologies.

Works Cited:
Chromebook AT Cross Walk.

                          ~My Individual Professional Development Plan~
Based on the outcome of my MTTS self-Assessment, I intend to explore and research the futuristic technologies that are available for free online that I can use in my future classroom in order to become more proficient with it's use.

The goals that I have after reflecting on my MTTS Self-Assessment is to use more online surveys and Google Forms to allow my students to share their thoughts and provide me with feedback that I can incorporate when planning my instruction. using these forms of technology will also help me to individualize my instruction and make it more meaningful to my students.
Beyond this course, I want to learn more about how I can apply for grants in order to get more technology into my classroom, to engage my students and help them to become better prepared for working and learning in the 21st century. I think that digital learning is extremely helpful in developing interactive and engaging lessons and this course has helped me identify specific aspects of technology that I can cite when applying for grants.
Using technology in the classroom contributes to the equity in a number of ways. First, it is important that all students have access to the technology in the classroom if they need it, and that technology is used fairly between students. It is important that all students are exposed to technology since being technologically literate is extremely important in the twenty-first century. In addition, I can also use technology to ensure that all of my students' needs are being met and to differentiate my instruction. There are many free programs online that can be used to meet the needs of different learners such as text to speech software and voice typing features that students can use on the computer.
In an ideal setting, I would love to use technology in all subject areas. Currently I am student teaching in a school that has a very wide range of technologies and I would like to use this knowledge of the SMART board, Chromebooks etc. that I have acquired to improve my lessons in my future classroom. Ideally I would also hope to use assistive technology daily in my classroom if I have a student who needs it.
At my placement school, I have seen many technology inclusive teaching techniques that I would like to use in my future instruction. One review technique that I observed another teacher using was playing a Jeopardy review game with her students using a PowerPoint presentation. This is a simple way to engage the students using technology in the classroom. I have also seen teachers allowing students to use Google doc and Google slides to collaborate on group projects. My school as a whole is very focused on using inquiry based project with the students. Students are give a link to a Livebinder that the media specialist created. This Livebinder, as it is call at our school, contains many approved link that students can use to when conducting their research. For example, if students are researching the Civil Rights Movement they cause use Google Classroom to access the Civil Rights Movement Livebinder to find age appropriate articles on this topic. In my future classroom I would like to also focus on inquiry based projects, since I think that they give students the freedom to choose a topic that they are interested in and then create a PowerPoint presentation to share their research.
To ensure that students are using technology in my classroom responsibly, I will talk to the principal of my school to see if we can get the software DyKnow that my placement school uses. This software allows teachers to see all of their students' computer screens, block website, send direct messages, freeze students screens and track how much time students are spending on each website. This resource has been very helpful in holding my students accountable for being productive with their time on the chromebooks. At the beginning of the year, my mentor teacher and I noticed that some students were taking advantage of their time on the chromebooks to play games and visit websites that they shouldn't have been on. With this software, my mentor teacher and I are able to see all of our student's screens at one time and send them messages if we notice that they are off track. This program does cost money, which is why I would need to talk to the principal about getting the funding for it, or apply for grants.
A final goal that I have in terms of using technology in my future classroom, is to use technology to help me formally and informally assess my students. Technology is a fantastic resource when it comes to assessment because it often provides almost instantaneous feedback. For example, I could have my students complete a Google Form poll after teaching a lesson to gauge my students understanding and comfort level with the topic. My students may also feel more comfortable messaging me with questions online rather than asking in front of the entire class or in person. I can also input student data online to monitor student progress and identify common areas of confusion where I need to reteach or revisit in my instruction to ensure that all students are succeeding academically .
