Impulsivity, memory problems, and higher rates of alcohol use disorder may be tied to these changes in the prefrontal cortex caused by adolescent binge drinking. Both the prefrontal cortex and the cerebral areas of the brain were found to be thinner and have less volume compared to teenagers who did not drink. These teens also showed less white matter development. These problems could lead to struggles in adulthood with inhibiting responses or controlling impulses, remembering events, verbal learning and memory, and making healthy decisions, especially those that involve short-term versus long-term rewards.
