In the story, The Rainbow Fish has beautiful scales but doesn't want to share them. First, a small blue fish asks for one of his scales, but the Rainbow Fish is greedy and doesn't want to give them away. Then, the Rainbow Fish realizes that he has no friends. Next. Rainbow Fish talks to some ocean animals and learns that he has to be kind to have friends. So, the Rainbow Fish gives away his scales. Finally, all the fish have one of his beautiful scales and they all live happily ever after.
