9th and 10th grade students might feel like they are grown up but they still need quite a bit of structure in their day, even at my tiny little school.

However, although I've tried each year--really, at the beginning of each semester--I can't ever be the teacher that meets the students at the door. I greet them as they come in, but standing at the door feels very unnatural to me. Instead, I'm usually at the board or out in the classroom, chatting with them as they take their seats.

I do always notice whether or not they have their materials and whether they are in their proper uniforms. If there's an issue, they are sent back to their lockers to solve the problem.

This is new to me, I'm finding it a little hard to find things that aren't a bit cheesy to be honest!
Im my mind, the age groups I"ll be working with need preparing for university life, and much of that relies on them being self-motivated, and organised. My plan would be to encourage them to do that, and be responsible adults.
Of course the classroom needs rules, but I'd hope not to have to babysit them (although I'll get back to you on that in February!)
