I thought he made a good point about how we are so busy here in America, we have a schedule, get up, go to work, clean the house, get our families taken care of, run our errands, go to bed, repeat! In the country he came from he said he had more freedom, and everyone was the same, there was no one to compare to.

Connections are so crucial with ALL students, but as he spoke I felt the importance to dig a little deeper to take the time to talk, see what is happening at their homes or what happened in their lives before they arrived in the US. These moments could change their lives in so many ways.

I started my teaching career at a dual-language school in Marshalltown. Through this PD I was reminded that I've fallen away from a few of the good practices that I used there - thinking that my students didn't need as much support. I'm back to using lots of visuals to create more context for students to make connections between music, music vocabulary, lyrics, and the real world.
