This is from the district website under Technology & Innovation: One-to-One Technology for ALL Students. I noticed they made a point to put "all" in capital letters for emphasis. So, if that is the district's stance on it, I cannot understand how hard it is to get working iPads for students when a Chromebook is not appropriate. Asking for iPads in place of, not in addition to, Chromebooks has become a ridiculous battle that takes away from student learning. My low learners are not supported and given appropriate access to their education. I should not be the only opportunity the student has with a communication device. 30 minutes of speech/language therapy will not teach a child to communicate. I wish the technology and innovation department or administration could understand. I think the best place to start the dedicated communication device battle is getting iPads in our CBI/SEC classes that are not first generation iPads. We won't be able to know if they need a dedicated device until they have the opportunity to trial it. If we truly are implementing Free and Appropriate Education, that is equal to their peers, getting school-based iPads for those students should be the first step.

I spent a great deal of time trying to get the students in the CBI classroom IPADS last year. I finally got 4 year old IPAD mini loaners from the school library after 2 months of back and forth emails between SPED supervisors and tech supervisors. It was exhausting and disappointing. I feel that secondary students often get overlooked, even though some weren't even in the district when they were young. Whatever process you choose, please don't forget our older students in the process. They deserve access, too!

Priority to 3-5 grade students-regardless of regular/SEC placement that don't already have an iPad in class. That being said, I have 4 kindergarteners in reg ed and k-2 students in SEC that we don't have access to the app store on the iPad and tech refused to give it to us and Rachel. None of my students here right now have access to AAC apps unless they are with me in speech. I also cannot stress enough that, while I recognize that these are expensive programs, I have to have multiple system access in the classroom-not just for 30 min in speech- for my young students. How else can we trial things to see what works for them?

We will be thankful for any devices! Indestructible cases and screen protectors are definitely a must. Straps are not as high of a priority at this time. Any parent/teacher education that comes with the device during school hours would be wonderful :)
