When I was a little girl, I always got cuchillo and cuchara confused, (knife and spoon).  The words were so similar, that I couldn't remember which was which.  By self-assessing, and reflecting on this learning block of mine, I finally learned the difference.  A ELL learner friend of mine had the same problem with kitchen and chicken.
