Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

Prince Franz Ferdinand was the archduke of Austria and he was in a parade to make a speech when he was murdered. He was killed by a Serbian group called the Black Hand. This caused the world to spiral into war and Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia.

Germany (being allied with Austria-Hungary) comes up with an idea called the Schlieffen Plan to invade France and Russia. They want to invade France first, but they have to go through Belgium.

Battle of Gallipoli

This battle was fought by the Anglo-French against Turkey/the Ottoman Empire. The goal was to allow allied ships through the Dardenelles and overtake Constantinople, knocking the Ottoman Empire out of the war.

Sinking of the Lusitania

This ship, called the Lusitania, was sunk by German U-Boats (submarines) and it killed 1200 people (including 128 Americans). This changed the vibe of how America was feeling. They stayed out of it at first, but now their people had been impacted. This is an example of unrestricted warfare.

Battle of Verdun

The Battle of Verdun was fought by the French and the Germans. Lasting until December 18, 1916, it was one of the longest and most fatal battles ever fought. 400,000 people were killed (350,000 of them being Germans). Gases were used a lot in this battle - especially phosgene.

Zimmerman Telegram

This is a telegram sent from the Germans to Mexico and it proposed an alliance against the U.S. Before it could reach Mexico, the British intercepted it and warned the U.S. Mexico didn't accept this alliance and it put a bad taste in the American's mouths.

Russian Revolution

This revolution where the people rebelled against the imperial government and the Bolsheviks won and were in power. The people were dissatisfied with the leadership after the huge losses in the war, along with the economic hardships, so they fought back.

America joins the War

On this date, congress declared war on Germany. The Germans gambled with the Telegram and sinking of the Lusitania, and it ended up costing them. The U.S. joined the war apart of the allied powers, against Germany.

Wilson's 14 Points

President Woodrow Wilson proposed a 14 point plan for lasting peace. It had 3 goals - improved international relations, restoration of territories, and restriction on military strength. The only point that ends up getting accepted is the international organization to prevent wars - the League of Nations.

Treaty of Versailles

This was the ending treaty of the war, bringing it fully to a close exactly 5 years on the day that it began. It wasn't all glamorous, however. The defeated nations weren't included at the peace conference and were forced to abide by the rules the winners dictated. The winners decided that Germany cannot have an army, had to pay $33 billion, and had to take full blame for the war. This ended up being the birth of the Nazi party because the Germans wanted to blame somebody (and they chose the Jewish people).
