He was known for his respectful attitude toward the Virgin Mary and Bishop Juan de Zumarraga which led him to be a Franciscan missionary. He married a woman named Maria Lucia who traveled with him to various places in Mexico to convert people to Catholicism and complete mission trips. On December 9, 1531, Juan Diego was visited by Mary who told him to build a church on Tepeyac Hill outside of Mexico City, which he completed, after he presented miracles and had lengthy discussions with the bishop.
