St. Juan Deigo was born in Mexico and raised in the Aztec pagan religion by his uncle since his father died when he was young. He was known for his respectful attitude toward the Virgin Mary and Bishop Juan de Zumarraga which led him to be a Franciscan missionary. He married a woman named Maria Lucia who traveled with him to various places in Mexico to convert people to Catholicism and complete mission trips. On December 9, 1531, Juan Diego was visited by Mary who told him to build a church on Tepeyac Hill outside of Mexico City, which he completed, after he presented miracles and had lengthy discussions with the bishop. For the rest of his life, he took care of pilgrims who visited the shrine of Mary, and he was buried at the church he had built for her.

Juan Diego was miraculously visited by Mary who revealed his vocation of building God a church which was seen as a miracle. God revealed himself to Juan physically through Mary, instead of immanently which was beyond his human comprehension. This event was a major turning point in Juan Diego's life where God was experiential in Juan's understanding of his true calling.

Juan Diego was not born into Christianity, rather he converted to Christianity in his adulthood, yet he is still a saint. God allowed Juan Diego to experience different religions, missions, and lifestyles before he decided to devout his life to God. This shows how God respected Juan Diego's freedom, and came to him when he put his free will in his hands.
