Johnson, the queer black young man. In an older interview, he explains that this book was his way of fighting the standard methods of being as well as standing up and showing recognition of the cause. The issue with the text is the LGBTQ content being spread to the spongelike youth, which caused many questions and challenges, 86 to be exact. Johnson targets a younger audience, and the argument held by challengers is that this book introduces them to thoughts they may not have been thinking before. This take is understandable, seeing that media is food that has to be digested, and the younger you are, the more you absorb, but Johnson looks at the book as a tool rather than an introduction to the subject. These issues arose recently as the book was published in 2020. The topic is controversial nowadays, with many people losing themselves and being controlled by what is currently on their screen. When it comes to people protecting the youth and being offended by the topic, I feel that it is both. The youth is our main priority because they are the future, and the subject being discussed is fairly new and slightly trendy. They have the right to protect their offspring, and it's already hard enough being a parent as it is. Imagine coming home and your twelve-year-old son telling you he read a book with sexually explicit content and wants to do everything in that book word for word. It's not what he should be focused on at the moment. He should be worried about what his next science fair project will be or his multiplication table. All I am saying is, why do kids need tools to help them with their sexuality at such a young age? They do not even know if they really want to be an astronaut or not. Committing crimes, doing drugs, and having sex. These are common themes among delinquent teens that are heading in the wrong direction off the path. Parents and guardians most likely did not want to expose clean kids to such media. As I stated in the last post, young individuals are sponges. They appeared in 2022, when the book was challenged 48 times. I feel the actual reason people challenged the book was to truly protect their children. I wouldn't want my child reading about sex and drugs when they should be focused on their multiplication tables or their history project on the first president of the United States. I feel the ban was justified based on my previous statement and am appalled that it has taken so long to do so. The main arguments for censoring the book the explicit drug use and sexual content, which should not be anywhere near an environment meant to teach the youth. There are no middle-ground solutions for the problem, but the author may have written this book to show kids what not to do. Reading content like this should be solely for adults, and it is unethical to market to our children, who are our future. Kids do not need to be reading sex comics and drug ring books. They should be learning as much about themselves as possible. They should be reading about things that will help them to flourish when following their dreams and aspiration.
