The term 'model' has the connotation of "the epitome of ____," or "a representation of a system that is to be followed." In science, models are created to gain a deeper understanding and in an human roles, the term model can mean "a person who creates moral, appearance, and action standards in society. The common action when seeing a model is striving to replicate it. Does a place, such as Awra Amba, only become a model after going viral and receiving global outreach?

I agree with the book that going viral is very similar to a virus. There are many factors that affects whether something can effectively spread or not, and the virus/thing that goes viral can be positive or negative. Despite the positive things that Zumra tried to establish in Awra Amba, there's some underlying problems in Awra Amba. Is Awra Amba going viral a positive thing?

There are multiple arguments that no population (or group of people) is actually 100% homogenous in both biological and cultural aspects. How does that change the definition of who is an insider? Does Awra Amba have a harder time defining what an insider is because of its viral model status?

At the beginning of the introduction, there is a large section that discusses the definitions that have been created in regards to what is a model. Dr. Ostebo says the following: "While pen-and-paper models appear to be most prevalent within the policy world, other forms of models, are also being used and promoted, such as human role models, scale models, model cities, or, as is the case with regards to Awra Amba – model villages." What about models that don't represent something that should be attained or a goal? Is Awra Amba a restrictive model in that sense?

Here is a short video I found that talks a bit about what makes Awra Amba a model village and how unity between its members is achieved. In this video, Zumra mentions that gender equality in the work force is one of the main things that helps maintain a peaceful and productive village. Could such equality be matched in more developed societies, such as in the U.S., or even come close to the level found in Awra Amba? What factors may contribute to the overall approach that these societies may take in creating a more equal future?

Dr. Ostebo mentions that "the model status comes at a price: obligations, responsibilities, and pressure to engage in representational and performative strategies aimed at maintaining, controlling, and stabilizing the Awra Amba narrative" (pg. 35). We see that by becoming viral, the village may no longer be exactly how it was before gaining international attention. Would this increase in popularity cause an observable change in the dynamic of the community?
