Harry is an 11 year old boy whose parents had died when he was a baby. Harry grew up being raised by his Aunt and Uncle who were abusive to him. On the day of his 11th birthday, Harry finds out that both of his parents were magical and that he himself is a wizard. That is until his 11th birthday. When he turned 11 he received a letter to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry quickly learns that he is famous in the wizarding word, as he is known as "The Boy Who Lived". He learns that an evil and ruthless wizard by the name of Voldemort, killed his parents and tried to kill him as well. However, for some reason, it didn't work. All that is left from his attempt is a lightening bolt scar on Harry's forehead. Voldemort had not been seen or heard from since and is perceived vanquished. 
On the train to Hogwarts, Harry befriends two other first-year students, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger. Harry's first year is nothing short of exciting as trouble seems to follow him throughout the year. Noticeably right off the back,  he finds that his potions master does not seem to like him, and he creates an enemy in another house.  Harry endures three headed dogs, trolls, and jinxes. During this time, Harry is starting to feel that Voldemort may actually still be out there, and may be looking to come back. 
For Christmas, Harry received an invisibility cloak that was willed down from his father. He uses this cloak to sneak around the castle, and discovers the Mirror of Erised, which shows a person what they want the most, and learns about the sorcerer's stone, which can be used to revive the dead. Harry learns that Voldemort is still out there and that he is the one who has been trying to steal the stone. 
Harry and his friends go searching to find the stone and overcome many different obstacles and puzzles to do so. Harry finds the stone in the mirror and is confronted by a professor who has been been housing Voldemort on the back of his head.
