Because some people don't have stuff other people have. Just how she found the door and when she went in it that night she saw a better house, food, plus they had a garden that was Caroline . Also they had better stuff but there was something different the mother , the father, they had button eyes. Then the cat it was talking because it's like a voice in her head telling her she needs to be grateful. 4. Be OK with what you eat  because it dos't  matter what you eat it matters that you at least eat something  because it dos't matter what you want Just like  be thankful.
