Hathorne's motives in "The Crucible" are reflected in his harsh judgement and strong beliefs in the Puritan government and religion. Judge Hathorne arrives to Salem already convinced that the Devil has invaded their town and will do whatever it takes to ensure that evil will not spread. Because of this, he believes the girls when they accuse someone of practicing witchcraft and immediately wants to punish those accused. Hathorne perceives himself to be doing God's work as a government official and is convinced that the court holds full authority in deciding people's fates.

"God be praised! It is a providence! He will confess! Proctor will confess!" (Miller, p. 237)

Hathorne praises and thanks God for John Proctor's confession, exemplifying his devotion to God. This shows how he believes that the trials and confessions are the "end all be all" of truth and justice, and that only by confessing can they truly have redemption.

"Riot! Why at every execution I have seen naught but high satisfaction in the town." (Miller, p. 232)

Hathorne doesn't understand why people would riot because he thinks that the townspeople are satisfied with the executions and that they are the appropriate punishment for "the guilty's" charges.

"And yet, when people accused of witchery confronted you in court, you would faint, saying their spirits came out of their bodies and choked you-" (Miller, p. 218)

Hathorne tries to catch Mary Warren in her "lie" (he believes she is lying about only pretending to see spirits). Initially, Mary Warren had said she saw spirits and proceeded to faint, and Hathorne immediately believed she was telling the truth about being "threatened by the Devil." This is because he had already thought that Salem was invaded by evil and the more the girls acted peculiarly or said to have seen "so and so" with the Devil, he felt even stronger validation in his reasoning. This is why he doesn't want Mary to go back on what she said/did.

The song is called "Changes Everything" from "The Conjuring 2" soundtrack. This is fitting because "The Conjuring" movies are about banishing evil entities, just like what Hathorne thought the executions were doing in "The Crucible.
