To open up the pandora's box and peel back the onion-like layers that keep our brain hidden from the world, only to reveal the inner machinations that drive us. To try and analyze the social functions which bind us in our day-to-day activities would be to peer at all of mankind through a looking glass. "One prominent explanation (for why we follow social norms) is, to some degree, internalized through socialization...", showing how norm following through our interactions with other people has been at the cost of getting along with other people. How would other fellow rule-followers react to the odd duck out? "The Stranger" presents this idea well, through the characterization of the protagonist, Meursault defying social norms at seemingly every turn. Such as when his boss offers him a promotion in form of a new job location and position, which Meursault turns down. "Then (my boss) asked me if I wasn't interested in a change in my life. I said that people never change their lives, that in any case one life was as good as another... he (my boss) looked upset that I never gave him a straight answer, that I had no ambition and that was disastrous in buisness". I consider myself a true adventurer into both sides of the greater known and unknown, never quite leaning towards any other side. I've experienced the normality set before me by society, and have rebelled by going against the grain. I've learned to claw my way through the world that wasn't quite for me, and as such as I believe I'm well-versed in terms of experiencing the collectivist ideals of this world. One of my greatest acts of sticking it to the man was coming out of the closet and revealing to my parents I had a girlfriend in middle school. I had always seen the heterosexual couples on television, in real life (in terms of my older sister dating a boy), but never got to see any fellow women-enjoyers. I was met with some backlash, mainly my parents denying my relationship and plugging their ears closed in another act to maintain "the peace". My parents have always been followers of the "blissful ignorance" crowd, and for me to come out by dating a fellow girl was out of the water for them. Luckily they came around when I got older, and I am still a proud bisexual woman. Will I continue to live by my own truth?
