Catherine McAuley was born on the 28th of September 1788 in Dublin, Republic of Ireland. Its located west of the UK and east of its neighbour United States of America. She was born and raised in a Catholic family as both her parents Elinor and James were Catholics. Both Elinor and James were two people that were always concerned and cared for those who lived in poverty or less fortunate. They appreciated and always acknowledged their kids to be happy of what they have and always helped the poor. Throughout her upbringing the actions and words of her parents crucial and loving actions influenced Catherine’s passion. To help the young women strive with their full potential to live a better lifestyle they intend of living in hopes of inspiring them to do the same to others in need. After the passing’s of both Catherine’s dear parents her and her siblings moved into the Callaghan’s home. Although her parents were no longer around it didn’t limit Catherine from still living out her belief ad caring on their legacy. The Callaghan’s were a couple who were very blessed and wealthy, however, they weren’t Catholics but still welcomed the McAuley’s with open arms into their home. The McAuley’s still committed and contributed to the Catholics standards and expectations by still doing things their parents did with them such as attending church prayer ceremonies regularly. With the support of the Callaghan’s financially Catherine used the space in their home to invite others and educate them upon the preparation of Baptism, reconciliation and many other activities like sowing. She later set a shop up for the young women to sell their goods to gain profit that can go towards their savings for the future. In 1822 gave his sole heir to Catherine shortly before his passing. On January 1st, 1827 Catherine created and founded the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ and later that year on September 24th the ‘House of Mercy’ was built on a property on Baggot St. It was designed to provide opportunities such as shelter of homes and education to young women who didn’t have any. Following this on 1831 December 12th Anna Maria Doyle & Elizabeth Harley became the first ‘Sisters of Mercy’ alongside Catherine.

The encyclical of ‘Rerum Novarem’ written by Pope Leo Xii on May 1891 would definitely be accepted by Catherine McAuley which talks about the equality of rights and duties of both upper and lower-class people for a more equal quantity of life. The ‘options for the poor’ was one of the seven principals which represented people whom struggle generally in life more than most people. As a person who understands and care for these people would be a no brainer and take it into consideration for sure.

Some great things which He designs to accomplish would have been too much without a little bitter in the cup. Bless and love the fatherly hand which has hurt you.

From the beginning of Catherine McAuley’s life she was taught how Jesus portrayed himself throughout his life as so Catherine followed Jesus’s footsteps of PROPHETIC, PRIESTLY, and KINGLY work through her mission; ‘The Sisters of Mercy’. Her attendance in church from an early age gave Catherine many life guidance quotes about caring and helping everyone. Entering into the adulthood she gave up all the money given by the Callaghan’s to build a house for young women without educations or home. There she gave up her time to provide women with what they once never received. In the messages, she left in her letters she wrote to others, Catherine shares her faith through the work and words of Jesus. As she travelled around to promote the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ she never failed to refer back to her Jesus in whatever she spoke of during her teachings.

Catherine provided the young women with food, water, education and shelter. Her sincere actions healed and changed the lives of many women. To this day there are living individuals and community that still carry on the life changing actions Catherine started. Most of which are schools, community and youth members of church who use the crucial, kind actions Catherine committed in their everyday lives during work. Most of the places that Catherine founded were throughout Ireland and England and some of the places are Bermondsey, London (1839), Galway (1840), Dublin community in Kingstown (1835) and even entered into Australia.

In 1846 the ‘Sisters of Mercy’ created a foundation in Perth Australia just half a decade after the death of Catherine McAuley. This mission was led by Ursula Frayne who was close with Catherine even by her side at her passing. The following decade more ‘Sisters of Mercy’ foundation was born and scattered in Australia. As time flew past many more schools were discovered by the legacy of Catherine McAuley including ‘Our Lady of Mercy College’ in 1968.

Matthew 25:34-40

The Final Judgement

34 Then the king will say to those at his right hand, ‘Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; 35 for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, 36 I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ 37 Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? 38 And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? 39 And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you?’ 40 And the king will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, [a] you did it to me.’

The parable of ‘The Final Judgement’ tells a story of how Jesus cared and showed people how to treat others as you would want to be treated even if they’re strangers. In the parable told and written by Mathew it states that Jesus said even if a person is a stranger to your eyes perform caring actions towards others or others to directly to you is a way of doing it to him. ‘Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, [a] you did it to me.’

As of this parable Catherine McAuley strived in every work she committed towards for herself to do the same. She showed these actions and value through her ‘Sisters of Mercy’ foundation. Always on a journey to help those who seek for guidance and remained focused on the importance of why she started her foundation.

The Suscipe

“My God, I am yours for time and eternity. Teach me to cast myself entirely into the arms of your loving Providence with a lively, unlimited confidence in your compassionate, tender pity. Grant, O most merciful Redeemer, that whatever you ordain or permit may be acceptable to me. Take from my heart all painful anxiety; let nothing sadden me but sin, nothing delight me but the hope of coming to the possession of You my God and my all, in your everlasting kingdom.

Amen”

Thirty Days

“It was Catherine McAuley's custom to pray two Thirty Days' Prayers in times of need, forbenefactors and co-workers and at the establishment of a new foundation. The following is an adaptation of the prayers. Merciful Jesus, you inspired in Catherine McAuley a lively conviction of your enduring love. In times of need she and her companions faithfully entreated your help, and they were never disappointed. In this same confident spirit, we come to you now. Because you walked among us, you know our human experience. You have shared our joys and sorrows. You have healed and comforted us, sustained and renewed us. Be with us now in this time of need. Let us experience your loving presence as you grant us this favor we ask of you: We also ask your blessing on our living and deceased family members, our sisters in community, our associates, companions and benefactors. Show them your loving kindness. Encouraged by your care for us, we will with lively fidelity devote ourselves to the works of mercy. Through our good works, may your people experience your unceasing care for them. We ask all this through the intercession of Mary, your mother and the mother of Mercy.

Amen.”

Catherine often used these prayers during times of doubt, help and encouragement. She prayed for a better day or fresh beginning for those who she was surrounded by or simply everyone. She used these on her mission and before as it was a way to connect with Jesus to receive help.
