         <title>                                   What is Genre?</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Typically, genre means " type " or " category " in terms of literature, music and films etc. They are used as a way to categorise different products that share similar features or characteristics.<br><br>Genres are particularly important in the Media and Film industries because they:<br>- Help quickly establish differences between media forms<br>- Help establish certain codes and conventions that film makers can follow in order to make the product look a certain way, achieve a certain effect &amp; attract a specific audience<br>- Help establish certain expectations and familiarity in audiences<br>- Help audiences to develop personal tastes around genre and consumption ( what they don't like )<br><br>In Media Studies A level, there are also different terms that link in to genre which are the following :<br><br>Sub-Genre : A subdivision of a genre of literature, music, films etc.<br><br>Hybrid Genre : A genre in fiction that blends themes &amp; elements from 2 or more different genres together. This can also be referred to as an across genre. An example of this could be a film with the two genres romance and action together.<br><br>Codes &amp; conventions : Codes are systems of sign which create meaning. These are often split into the two categories ; technical and symbolic. The category technical refers to the effects that can be made with things like camera equipment and editing which can symbolise or be a metaphor that something bad is going to happen or danger is near. As for the category symbolic, it often refers to things like the characters action which gives out a certain meaning to the audience. An example of this could be the use of mise-en-scene which refers to the costume, makeup, setting ( location ) and props used. For example, dark makeup on a character could instantly represent them as the villain to the audience.<br><br>Genre Tropes : A word or expression used in a figurative sense. For example, cliche's such as the girl in the film being the damsel in distress or a little blonde girl walking into a haunted house and eventually being trapped in the basement.</div>]]></description>
