Tracking Water Intake during a Marathon

Mark Besh, a former senior vice president of Cotiviti Healthcare, fills his free time with a variety of physically challenging hobbies. A high-altitude mountain climber, snow skier, and water skier, Mark Besh has also completed the New York and Chicago Marathons, a feat that requires adequate hydration.

Race hydration is a delicate balance that actually begins before the race, when many runners try to take in extra water in the hopes of keeping the body hydrated for a longer period of time. Unfortunately, because the human body eliminates extra water rather than storing it, this can slow the runner down unnecessarily. Experts recommend that runners instead drink just enough to not feel thirsty.

This guideline of drinking to thirst can work during the race, as well. This tends to lead to a replacement of 65 to 70 percent of sweat loss. Research has shown that simply drinking according to thirst neither limits performance nor increases risk of heat illness.

Some runners prefer to replenish more of their sweat rate, which they find by weighing themselves before and after a run. The difference then becomes the runner's target water intake. If a runner finds this difficult to track, the more standard guideline of 3 to 6 ounces every 15 to 20 minutes or a cup of water every other mile can be easier to remember.

A runner may also choose to gauge hydration by the color of his or her urine. Pale yellow is an ideal color, while clear indicates too much water and a dark tea yellow indicates dehydration.

Where to Hit the Slopes in the State of Arizona

Arizona resident Mark Besh has spent decades leading business growth on behalf of health care companies. Away from his professional responsibilities, Mark Besh enjoys skiing.

Arizona is generally thought of as a place to pursue warm-weather activities such as golf and hiking. However, the Grand Canyon State also houses four areas where skiers can hit the slopes.

1. Arizona Snowbowl: Located north of Flagstaff on the San Francisco Peaks, Arizona Snowbowl offers 777 acres of skiable terrain and a vertical drop of 2,300 feet. The mountain’s 40 trails consist of a mix of beginner, intermediate, and advanced, making it a good destination for skiers of all levels.

2. Mount Lemmon Ski Valley: A smaller venue, Mount Lemmon nonetheless allows Tucson-area residents the opportunity to enjoy 22 runs, most of which are at the intermediate and advanced level. Mount Lemmon does maintain some beginner runs, however, and a children’s lift ticket costs only $20.

3. Sunrise Ski Park: This White Mountains resort features more terrain and a greater number of runs than any ski destination in the state. It also operates 10 chairlifts, thus enabling Sunrise to shuttle 16,000 people up its 11,100 feet every hour.

4. Elk Ridge Ski and Outdoor Recreation Area: Arizonans looking for a family-oriented skiing experience can find this mountain along historic Route 66 in Williams. Consisting of 12 trails, Elk Ridge typically stays open for winter activities from December to March, though warm weather can necessitate a shorter season.
