the main 3 types of rocks are: igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic.

The difference between sedimentary rock and igneous rock is that sedimentary rock starts as a rock on earths surface. Igneous rock is formed when hot lava dries this is called magma. Wind and water break down tiny rocks into tiny little rocks. Water carries these little rocks into lakes and oceans where they sit. Layer by layer all these rock bits build up over time and the bottom layers start to form into rocks. Unlike sedimentary rock igneous rock forms when volcanoes and earthquakes force hot liquid out called magma. When magma dries it turns into igneous rock. Sedimentary rock and igneous rock do not make the same kind of rock.
