- Nelson first came face-to-face with the brutal reality of racial segregation in 1941
- Malan, the president of South Africa at the time, passed a variety of laws that encouraged segregation.
- The Population Registration Act allowed for the government to classify people by race, making race a determination of wealth and social status. Some families were separated due to the slight difference of skin pigmentation.
- The Group Areas Act created
residential apartheid and allowed for the government to divide people into different living areas according to their race.

The most reputable feat he achieved was his process of developing a constitution.

Mandela had the ability to look into the future and plan for possible outcomes. He could also anticipate what would not work for South Africa. All in all, he had a good sense of the future.

Mandela had very strong beliefs that he was willing to fight for.

He learned from his mistakes and his successes---along with the mistakes and successes of others---and took this knowledge to make himself a wiser leader. Mandela had the ability to adapt to situations.

However, he also knew how to choose his battles and see what was more important. His opinions developed slowly in his childhood and he took his time to put himself out there at a young age.

You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate the leadership."

All these lessons from Mandela show his wisdom in leadership, as well as the love he had for his people.
