Filmmaker Simon Lereng Wilmont's documentary chronicles the life of 10-year-old Oleg over a year, showcasing the gradual erosion of his childhood innocence amid the persistent conflict in eastern Ukraine. Oleg lives with his beloved grandmother, Alexandra, in the small village of Hnutove. With limited options available, they opt to remain in their home while many others flee. Each day presents new obstacles, and the war shows no signs of abating. In this nearly deserted village, Oleg and Alexandra serve as each other's sole source of stability, and the film poignantly illustrates the fragility of these close relationships while underscoring their vital role in survival. Through Oleg's perspective, the documentary delves into the experience of growing up in a war-affected region, revealing how a child's journey to comprehend the world is profoundly influenced by the perils and adversities of conflict. The Distant Barking of Dogs highlights the repercussions of war on the youth of eastern Ukraine, illuminating the emotional scars and lessons that this generation will carry as they move forward.

In 1965, following the military's seizure of power in Indonesia, a minor criminal named Anwar Congo and his associates aided the armed forces in the execution of over a million individuals, including suspected communists, ethnic Chinese, and intellectuals. While several nations with similarly troubling histories have implemented truth and reconciliation initiatives and have held perpetrators accountable, in Indonesia, those responsible for these atrocities continue to hold positions of authority, and members of the death squads are venerated as heroes. In a remarkable development, filmmaker Joshua Oppenheimer, alongside an anonymous Indonesian co-director for safety considerations, provides Anwar and his group the platform to narrate their experiences in any manner they choose. They opt to reenact their violent deeds in the style of American westerns, musicals, and gangster films that they admire, casting themselves in leading roles. The result is a disturbing depiction of a society where individuals who have committed egregious acts nonchalantly joke about their offenses on talk shows, underscoring a disconcerting culture of impunity.
