What is Marijuana

Marijuana is the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the Cannabis Sativa plant. . The plant contains a mind altering chemical know as THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol). The scientific name is simply Cannabis, named after the plant it comes from. Marijuana is something that is smoked, mixed with food, or brewed with tea. It is also mixed with other drugs such as cocaine, crack, and heroin, either making it safer or deadlier. People smoke marijuana in hand-rolled cigarettes (joints) or in pipes or water pipes (bongs). They also smoke it in blunts. People also use vaporizers to avoid the smoke. They pull out the active ingredients and collect their vapor in a storage area. Marijuana is a gateway drug, meaning it can lead to other drugs being used. It is also an illicit drug because there is no medical use. It is only used for recreational purposes.

When marijuana is taken in, THC quickly passes from the lungs to the blood. The blood goes to the brain and other organs. Since there is now THC, that is going to the organs too. causing harmful effects. Right now there is no medical use for Marijuana. The effects are felt after 30 minutes to an hour when eaten or drank. Smoking it causes the effects to be felt more quickly. Marijuana over activates parts of the brain that have the highest number of receptors. Along come many effects.

Marijuana has a long history of use, but it was never grown so people could get high, but as herbal medicine. It was most likely started in Asia around 500 BC. he history of cannabis cultivation in America dates back to the early colonists, who grew hemp for textiles and rope. Political and racial factors in the 20th century led to the criminalization of marijuana in the United States, though its legal status is changing in many places. The cannabis plant had many other uses than drugs just centuries ago. The Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 was the first federal U.S. law to criminalize marijuana nationwide. The Act imposed an excise tax on the sale, possession or transfer of all hemp products, effectively criminalizing all but industrial uses of the plant. (History.com Editors) As part of the “War on Drugs,” the Controlled Substances Act of 1970, signed into law by President Richard, repealed the Marijuana Tax Act and listed marijuana as a Schedule I drug—along with heroin, LSD and ecstasy, with no medical uses and a high potential for abuse. It was identified in anti-drug programs like D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) as a “gateway drug.” (History.com Editors)
