The great space race between the United States and Russia was going on around the time that the author was writing this story and other Science Fiction stories. The talk about space observatories and other future possibilities in space travel were being discussed and dreamed about. These different conversations influenced the writing that Clarke did. There was a space dog named Laika from Russia that inspired the name of the dog character in this story.
