The big idea I got from all this is quite simple. I will quote from Lisa Delpit in the book she wrote Called Other Peoples Children, "In order to teach you I must know you:! Its been my mantra for the last 20 years. To successfully educate all of our children we must work to remove the blinders built of stereotypes, monocultural instructional methodologies, ignorance, social distance(not the COVID-19 kind) biased research and racism. We must work to destroy those blinders so that it is possible to really see, to really know the students we must teach.

Culture is also about language diversity. The linguistic form a student brings to the school is intimately connected with love ones, their community and personal identity. Teachers need to support the language that students bring to school and provide them with new opportunities to use new language codes that make them feel welcome.

I think that a big takeaway from this is the important of creating student-centered learning approaches and affirm cultural differences rather than gloss over or discredit them. It is essential that students have a strong sense of self while not have a strong feeling of being "other." From many we are one. Culture is more than music and food, more than languages, that can be shared across many. Culture is deeper and harder to define, because culture is not just limited to the region of the world you are in now. It isn't limited just to your family connections.

NYC school children are the most diverse in the country. It's very important and our responsibility as teachers to create an environment where children feel safe to share their backgrounds without any judgement. Our children must have an awareness of their own cultural identity and views about difference, and the ability to learn and build on the varying cultural and community norms of students and their families.

Good teachers have empathy and understand the children that are in their classroom. CRSE is ingrained inside of them. As a whole, the children in our school have respect for one another. The DOE has already spent tens of millions of dollars on providing workshops that discuss equity. The money would better be spent giving teachers a chance to purchase materials for individual students that would accomplish this goal.
