When students are instructed in how to utilize the time and options for wasting it are disallowed, I find students use the time to complete assessments, find out what they missed while away, work with small groups, and complete daily work.

The most significant challenge is that expectations are either not clear, or not consistently reinforced throughout the school. Additionally, students need a lot of direct teaching to learn the expectations as well as how to meet them.

Some students also require additional supports by having staff track their educational needs and may need to be assigned (and possibly escorted) to specific rooms for the tutorial block.

Bring back flex

Particularly as it relates to athletics, when I talk to students about making up time missed due to the district's problematic busing for athletics, they overwhelmingly say that tutorial isn't being used to allow them to direct the time in that class as they need it. Rather, it seems that the majority of students are experiencing simply an extended block of whatever class is first.

Bringing back flex time would allow students to direct their own time and be in charge of their own needs in regard to their learning.

When flex was in place, the work that was done at the beginning of the semesters and after significant breaks to establish the purpose and expectations for flex was thorough and accomplished what it set out to do.

Flex also still allowed for teachers to dictate to students where/when their flex time was spent if necessary.

Flex allows us to focus that time on the kids who need interventions and want extensions, not simply those who were in the previous block. Those who do not need extension/intervention time can go to other current classes where they may need help or have more interest in pursuing an extension.

Tutorial has become more of a supervision issue some days where it is less of an issue when kids choose where they go or are held back to work on a specific skill/task. Flex had its own challenges, but the "no-fly" list addressed many concerns.

Consistent bell schedule would also be greatly appreciated as the Friday hit and miss balances minutes, but doesn't seem to address RTI or any other student outcomes. If we need to address additional minutes in class, we can look at the calendar now and play with block minutes to balance Flex as we did pre-Covid

Students value choice. My seniors especially miss Flex time because they knew which teacher to visit to make up work or seek extra support. It was valuable as a teacher because I had the ability to keep certain students back during Flex as well if they needed to do work for my class. It was easier to arrange make up work for students in Flex, because there was a whole week of Flex.

When we had Flex, students had to sign up to get into certain classrooms, so it created urgency for students to find the appropriate space to do their work.

Flex should also take place on Fridays when we bring it back. This makes for a more consistent bell schedule, and students are not left wondering if there is tutorial/flex time or if it is a regular Friday.

If Flex is brought back next fall, the grades 8's-9s and 10's-12s can be introduced to Flex again so that the expectations are clear for the entire school.

Flex was a great opportunity for students to go to their teachers and seek assistance on areas they were struggling in. It also allowed for teachers to schedule longer lessons if needed.
My students and I find that Tutorial can make for a very long block. Breaking things up and going to a new setting helps the students refresh more than a 5 min break (which often gets abused).
