Dissociative Identity Disorder is a mental illness that causes someone to develop multiple distinct personality states. It was formerly known as "Multiple Personality Disorder", but that name is no longer used, as it can sometimes be hurtful towards people. People with DID live in a system. Kind of like a hub. A home base for all their switches. There, the different personalities can talk, and live on their own time when they aren't fronted. The personalities are referred to as "alters" Multiple alters can be fronted at one time, and they all are like different people. They have different ages, sexualities, genders, etc. Each alter has their own job. I.e., trauma holder, protector, mother, etc. They help keep the system in balance and do their jobs to make sure life goes smoothly. The "host" is the alter that holds the birth name of the person(s). They often times take care of financial issues and other things that cause them to write or sign the birth name. There are triggers that can push another alter out, or they can come out as they please. To learn more about DID, YouTuber Anthony Padilla made a video explaining in detail everything about it and interviewed 3 different systems to get their thoughts.

DID is caused by extreme trauma at a young age. Normally, a child will fully develop their personality at the age of 7, but people with DID did not get this chance in life, and it therefore caused them to develop multiple personalities.

Switching is a common question-starter. When the system is switching, the body goes into a state of daydream and disconnects from reality almost, and some people find it sort of scary, so it is important to be respectful and kind around systems and help them when they are switching.

Sometimes, different alters share memories, but other times, they have their own, and sometimes do not know where they are or how they got there because the system did not communicate. This can cause systems to not be able to get things done because they keep switching and not knowing what they are trying to accomplish.
