Auggie, and the rest of his family go to Via's school play. They go to see Via's boyfriend, who got a main role, and for Via, who was an understudy for the main character. But, when the show started, they saw that Via was the main character, and that the actual main character was sick!

After the play, they all went up to Via, and her boyfriend. They told them that they each did such a good job. Auggie got lost in the crowd, and suddenly someone hugged him from behind. He thought it was Via, but when he turned around it was Meranda! Meranda was Via's old friend, and Meranda always loved Auggie. Meranda once told Auggie she would always love him like a sister would. Via hated that she said this, and she isn't friends with Miranda anymore.

Sadly, their dog, Daisy had to be put down, this caused a lot of sadness for Auggie, and his whole family. Daisy was like the avocado to his toast, they had always been best buds, but now it was the end of that.

Percy uses Iris’s newly restored staff to create rainbows that get the serpents’ attention. Annabeth uses her magic baseball cap to turn invisible and find Grover. Percy trips as he runs from the serpents, twisting his ankle. They close in around him, and he realizes that they will soon rip him to shreds. He does not want to die, and he wishes he could tell Annabeth how much he loves her. As soon as he makes his wish, the staff lifts him into the air and transforms him into a rainbow, transporting him directly to Annabeth and Grover at the mouth of the cave. The staff is a messenger god’s staff, after all, so its job is to deliver messages. Percy’s friends are relieved that he is safe; he tells both of them that he loves them. Percy and Annabeth return the staff to Iris the following day. Grover is doing his photoshoot with Blanche. Iris is pleased to get the staff but reluctant to provide information about the chalice, because she thinks its true thief is very dangerous. Eventually, she tells them that they will find the thief in Greenwich Village.

As the friends celebrate Percy’s victory, a hula-hoop falls from the sky. It is one of Ganymede’s symbols; attached is a message asking for immediate assistance. Zeus is throwing a feast right now, so Ganymede needs the chalice. Zeus is hosting a brunch to celebrate his mother, the titan Rhea. Percy hates brunch. Annabeth gives Percy her baseball cap and heads to school. Percy and Grover go to the Empire State Building, where there is a secret entrance to Mount Olympus. Grover tells Percy to enter Zeus’s palace through the kitchens, where a cloud nymph called Naomi will help him. Grover distracts the security guard by hula-hooping while Percy, wearing the cap and carrying the chalice, takes the elevator to the 600th floor. Annabeth’s cap keeps minor gods and spirits from noticing Percy as he runs toward Zeus’s palace, but he knows it will not work against the major gods.

Percy is about to get clobbered but gets saved to a loud beat of music it was the kids that they invited over to party with all of them together were able to defeat the ghosts. When Hecate got back she was impressed everything was better then when she left and gives Percy her card for college but Percy tells her about what they had to go though and she was surprised and gave Percy a boon which was to get anything he wanted and he opened back up the Magic school and gave Gale and Hebaca more freedom.

The deadline to apply is approaching, and he still needs two more letters of recommendation from Greek gods. His English teacher wakes him from a nap in class saying his aunt is waiting in the office. As he has no aunts on the human side of his family, he is concerned, even more so when his school counselor Eudora, a Nereid (sea nymph) who works for his father, Poseidon, hides in her office. Stepping into the principal’s office, he finds a woman dressed in black, green fire wreathing her hair. She dismisses the principal, who appears entranced, and introduces herself as the “Triple Goddess.” Percy acknowledges that he should probably know what that means, but with so many Greek gods and their propensity for changing form, it can be difficult to keep track. The lady explains that she is Hecate and wants to offer a quest to Percy. The quest is to babysit her hellhound and her polecat for a week. Percy finds Grover and tells him this, and then they head to the cafe to tell Percy's mom, Sally.

Percy tells Annabeth who was in the library at that time working on a project with some other comrades. Percy pulls her aside for a minute into her dorm room and Percy tells her about the quest. Annabeth is very happy and Percy is unsure why everybody is feeling so happy about the quest. Percy gets a bad feeling as he is going there. Percy and Annabeth arrive and Grover is not far behind. When they get to Hecate's lair, they see 3 talking doorknobs, one of the says the truth, one says a lie, and the last one says something completely random. The door in front of them opens and there stands a giant hellhound. Grover greets him and they talk together in the language animal-nese. They are greeted into the house by the hellhound, whose name is Hecuba. Then they see Gale the farting weasel and his smell is absolutely horrible. Hecate greets them from the balcony and gives them a 3 drachma tour of the mansion.

The mansion’s interior is wrecked. Percy initially fears an attack, but Annabeth notices that the damage was inflicted from within. Strawberry- goo is splattered on everything, some steaming like acid. They run to the kitchen, which is similarly destroyed. A triple-sized Grover is lying in the mess, passed out. He groans and, after letting out an enormous belch, shrinks back to his normal size. When he sees the destruction, Grover is distraught and explains that it was the milkshake. Annabeth suggests Grover get cleaned up, but he tells her to find Hecuba and Gale. Annabeth and Percy run through the house, but the eels tell Percy the animals left when the door bursts apart. Back in the kitchen, Grover scolds himself. Annabeth tries to focus him, saying they will need his help to find Hecuba and Gale. Percy silently rages, though he knows he should not blame Grover. They should never have left him alone with the milkshake. Recognizing that Percy is struggling with his anger, Annabeth sends him to get the animals’ leashes. He thinks about Hecate’s ability to control the Mist and consequently the reality that people experience (the “Mist” is a force that prevents mortals from glimpsing supernatural scenes, replacing them with visions and false memories).

Lina accidentally forgot to stop the recording, and they recorded a private conversation about dumping waste into the ocean. Grandpa,Zoe, and Alex sneak onto the yacht Sweet Caroline. They discover a secret compartment full of 20 dollar bills. They hear two men come onto the boat, so they all have to hide. After a long time the men leave and they come out, but all the money is being burned on the deck of the ship. They all have to jump out of the ship. After that the flashback is done and it resumes.

In ancient times, Gale sold potions and magical scents but “had somehow gotten on Hecate’s bad side” (page 125). She also had a gas and farting problem. Pondering these things, Percy stares at a bookshelf and notices a display of seeing devices, including the broken blue eyeglasses, engraved SEJ, from his vision. Percy knows those initials. Ghosts of not only the dead but also memories and regrets close in on him as he backs out of the library. Percy and Grover head to find Gale, and then, saying he needs to ground himself before they search for Gale, Grover leads Percy into Gramercy Park and then lies down on the ground and covers himself with leaves and dirt. Squirrels and a black rat come to him, covering him almost completely. Vines and tree roots begin to wrap around him until alarmed, Percy interrupts. Grover explains that he was conferring with everything alive on Manhattan and now knows Gale’s last known location. Later, he admits that a risk of the grounding method is that he might “dissolve into nothing” (page 134). Percy freaks out about this and sends some fire hydrants to other states and cities. He claims down, and then they start again to find Gale with a pretty good lead from Grover.

Things go sideways when the store attendant, another Nereid, was talking to Grover and Percy butted in. They take that Nereid down and Annabeth comes into the store only to see Percy and Grover wrapping a Nereid in Halloween themed wrapping paper. Gale was not there yet again. Annabeth, along with Percy and Grover go to the next store. Annabeth walks in as a queen and Percy and Grover are the bodyguards. They speak to the "managers" 2 more Nereids. Things get ugly when they find Gale, and start throwing potions at each other. They take the Nereids down, but Percy is an octopus, Annabeth has an owl head, and Grover is turned into a human. Percy tries to reason with Gale to bring him home, meanwhile a big bucket of goo is like a ticking time bomb waiting to explode the store and whoever is in it.

Apollo wanted to throw him into Tarterus but Hermes bribes him with musical instruments and has no punishment and keeps the cows.

A cop comes to Sadie’s room to ask questions about the incident at the museum. He doesn’t believe anything she says, which annoys Sadie even more. She storms to the window and sees Amos outside. Not knowing what to say, she tells Amos’s name, but the officer says Amos couldn’t be involved because he’s in New York. Sadie heads back downstairs and the police have a talk with her, Carter and the grandparents about what they are going to do. The police officer is put into some sort of trance and leaves. A gold and white statue of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom, guards the camp from intruders. Though Meg is awestruck at the sight of the camp, Peaches, the karpos and Apollo sense an eeriness in the air. As the trio tries to enter the woods that surround the camp, the very trees seem to be blocking their way. In the best of circumstances, Apollo is wary of woods, possibly because they contain dryads or tree-protecting spirits, who remind him of Daphne. As Meg and Apollo lose their way in the woods, Meg asks Peaches to help. Peaches glows bright green and disappears in a swirl of leaves. Apollo hears a female voice speaking his name, asking him to find “it.” The voice reappears in Apollo’s head, saying “THE FALL OF THE SUN. THE FINAL VERSE” (page 70). Disoriented by the voice, Apollo falls into a stream, and Meg has to fish him out. Meg gets him to Camp Half-Blood, but Apollo is unconscious. Will Solace gives Apollo ambrosia and nectar but he was mortal so he nearly imploded. A little after that, Apollo gained consciousness and got up with Will's help.

Chiron asserts that the race will help the campers better understand the legendary Labyrinth or maze of Daedalus, which has reopened in the camp. Apollo protests that it is impossible to map the Labyrinth, a maze that can think for itself and is always expanding, since it was created by the master inventor Daedalus to contain the Minotaur. At dinner, Conor Stoll and Sherman Yang, two boys whom Meg has humiliated since her arrival, plan a prank attack on Meg. As the two throw a golden net over Meg’s head, the proceedings are broken up by a howl and a “blur of chubby flesh, leafy wings, and linen diaper” (page 112), as Peaches the karpos lands on Sherman. Apollo and Meg find themselves in a dark tunnel supported by oak beams. Meg draws Apollo’s attention to a glowing golden apple about 30 yards away, but Apollo warns her it may be a trap. Confirming Apollo’s suspicion, another team is hit and chased away by sparking cannonballs as they approach the apple. Apollo and Meg lumber away in the other direction. Moving through the labyrinth, Apollo observes that the maze doesn’t seem as evil as it did in ancient times when its creator Daedalus was alive. Reaching a Y cross section in the corridor, Apollo senses a sulfurous smell from the right side and a sawing sound from the left. Meg chooses to go in the direction of the smell, pulling Apollo along. The tunnel joins a narrow, long cavern that rises up like a volcanic vent, reminding Apollo of a claw mark made by a creature from Tartarus. Apollo urges Meg to turn back, but she insists she can see and smell a golden apple in the cavern. With Meg dragging him forward to a narrow shelf at the end of a tunnel, Apollo realizes the cavern is “omphalos—the navel of the ancient world” (page 163). Afraid, Apollo tells Meg to be quiet, since they are right under Delphi, the chamber of the Oracle, seized by the monster Python.
