They chose to go to Africa instead of across the Atlantic because Africa was closer and they were trying to get closer to Jamestown so when they went, it would take a shorter amount of time.

2. They were getting lost because they lost count of the North star. Which made it dark.

3. There were three currents coming into each other and it was hard to get around. Atlantic, Arctic, and Indian oceans.
