The rebooted Ultimate Spider-Man series.

This place looks kind of dead, so I figured I'd kickstart it again. Let's talk about Hickman's Ultimate Spider-Man. It’s got four issues out and a fifth coming later this month. Here, I mainly want to talk about my thoughts on what has transpired and what I would like to see in the future, and I encourage you all to share your own.

So, for starters, I really like this version of Spider-Man. In fact, if this quality continues, he will probably be my second favorite version of Peter Parker, after Garfield’s Amazing Spider-Man. I dig the beard he’s got too; it makes him look like such a Chad, even before the spider bite. In issue #1, I really like the dynamic with him and MJ and her being supportive of him. It was so nice to see that, as the last time I saw that was back in the JMS Spider-Man run before One More Day. His kids seem likeable enough. We haven’t gotten a whole lot of insight into their personal lives or anything, but May is so cute and I really enjoy the relationship she has with Peter and them bonding over his newfound powers.

I also have to say I enjoyed the twist with Peter’s origin in this universe. I thought it was a pretty cool move to have him decide to be a hero out of a desire to reclaim his destiny and bring hope to others, instead of out of vengeance, guilt, and responsibility.

I also think his picotech suit is so cool. The plain, sleek, black look was definitely appealing to me and I like how it’s like nanotech and gives him a way to quickly change into his Spider-Man uniform. Plus the added bonus of it being able to change designs is so cool and I really dig Peter's classic/main suit in the series. The spider emblem has a classic feel to it and the red and blues really pop.

I also have to say that this version of Harry Osborn is really interesting to me. I’m not sure how much Peter should trust Harry. In fact, I have no idea where Hickman is going to take Harry’s journey at the moment. Right now, he feels like he could be an antihero, especially since the Maker and his Illuminati were responsible for his death. I feel like Harry is more than willing to get his hands dirty while Peter isn’t willing to cross certain lines, such as torture and death. I think he and Harry will remain friends to start with but may grow apart as time progresses. As to how far apart they may grow, I can’t say just yet. Perhaps Harry will warn Peter about his naivety and Peter won’t listen to him, and as a result of that, someone close to him could die. In this universe, Harry may be similar to Red Hood or Vegeta from Dragonball and become sort of an antagonist to Peter, trying to show him that he needs to be more cold blooded if he wants to bring about real change to the corrupt. Or, he could totally go off the deep end and become a full on villain, where nothing is morally prohibited for the greater good and the ends justify the means.

As for Uncle Ben and Jameson, I’m not sure whether or not Ben will die in this universe. It could certainly be a good catalyst for Peter to realize he’s a bit out of his league and could lead to the lesson of responsibility, that this version of Peter has sort of a grasp on, but the full lesson hasn’t hit home yet. He seems to mainly be Spider-Man because he is looking to find himself, not out of any sort of obligation. Or, perhaps Jameson will die and then Uncle Ben will pursue the Spider-Man story even more relentlessly and he’ll become the person seeking to defame Spider-Man, much like Jameson in 616 continuity.

Some villains I'd like to see more of in this series include Wilson Fisk. While I don’t think the dynamic between the two will be as entertaining as in the OG Ultimate Spider-Man—let’s face it, that version of Peter was the biggest smartass version of Peter we’ve seen besides Garfield’s TASM, Spectacular Spider-Man, and classic 616 back when he was written with actual style. However, while it may not be as hilarious, the fights could definitely be more brutal. Peter is a thirty year old adult now and he’s a bit stronger than 616 Spidey when he started out, since he was fifteen. In this universe, he’s able to casually lift up a school bus and emphasis on his durability has already been shown.

I think seeing the Lizard would be really cool in this universe too. Especially since Peter is a father himself and can empathize with Connors even more strongly, plus it would be pretty interesting to see he and Harry’s different views on how they should deal with him. Harry would probably want to put the Lizard down for good, while Peter would want to try and cure him to reestablish the doctor with his family.

I also would like to see Mysterio, especially since Peter is still new and would be especially susceptible to Mysterio’s illusions and could even lead to giving him more anxiety for his family’s safety later down the line. And if Harry’s with him? Imagine what that could do to Harry’s mental health during his mission to avenge his father. That would be one way to turn him into a villain if Hickman wanted to.

But overall, I've been enjoying the heck out of this series and look forward to more.
