Eutrophication is an overpopulation of algae and dense plant life that leads to a depleted oxygen supply. This leads to a death of animal life and an unbalanced foodchain. Algae eventually become too crowded to sustain themselves.

In small amounts, Nitrates and Phosphates are beneficial to an ecosystem. However, when it becomes overly rich in nutrients, the animal life within the water dies from a lack of oxygen. This can often be a result of runoff sediment and fertilizer. When algae dies, they are eaten by bacteria and this depletes the water of its oxygen supply.

Water can become anoxic in oxygen levels, which is deadly to animals that rely on oxygen. Eutrophication can also cause toxic algal blooms, which lead to the growth of Pfiesteria, a single-celled organism that releases powerful toxins that leave bleeding sores on fish, and can eventually kill them. These same algal blooms also cause other harmful results similar to a "Red Tide".

Nutrient Limitation: limiting the amount of fertilizer and algae within the area could lead to a proportional decrease in the nutrients that are damaging.

Algae Filtration: several drumfilters and discfilters have been tested and proven useful in removing algae from surface water. However, results vary depending on the micron measurement of the filter (most efficient at 10 microns) and the assistance of certain chemicals such as polyaluminumchloride.
