Those accused of being witches were reported to have attacked their victims even while on the stand testifying. They would attack the girls who accused them with spells and cause them pain without even touching them. After the dissolvement of parliament, the Puritans were persecuted for not supporting the new Anglican Church. Wide spread distress like this was seen again during the Red Scare of the 1950s in America. During this time, many people in America were afraid of communism taking over the country and were suspicious of others for being communists. Thousands of people were accused of being either communists, or communist sympathizers and persecuted for it. If they were determined to be either of these, their entire lives would be ruined and they would lose everything.

The colony would be like a “city upon a hill” where God could be found through scripture and work ethic. The colony would be a utopia, a place of complete reform for the puritans. To expand on this goal, the Puritans set up schools to teach young men to become ministers and spread the word of God. His play was in response to the Red Scare of the 1950s, showing the similarities between the two. During both times, people were persecuted of being threats to their communities and his play emphasized the idea that “those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it.” He showed how the activities of the HUAC at the time were like the events of the with hunts that happened in Salem.
